So i spent all day unbolting my rear to swap it out, and while im at it im replacing my fuel pump. Problem is i have these three bolts that are proving quite a pain, my panhard bar bolts and the bolts for the shocks. Now, im one to usually use elbow grease and if it calls for it, a little WD40, but these things dont want to budge at all. Im just wondering what you guys use, or what the best penetrating oil is out there to loosen up those trickey bolts.
I finally broke down and bought a $20 impact gun for that kinda stuff. Went from working on a bolt for hours to just zipping it off. Best money I ever spent and less bloody knuckles.
Yea, i always like to use a breaker bar and maybe a little WD40 but these damn things just dont seem to want to come off. Im headin down to the store now, Ill check out some PB blaster as that seems to be a the thing to use. Also, i didnt know impact guns were that cheap, ill have to look into them now lol
after stripping heads off using liquid wrench and other penatrating sprays I ONLY USE PB BLASTER now, the stuff is great and it should be the only spray you should ever use unless you like breaking bolts. That and heat and impact guns

a good impact gun isn't.. they really arn't too expensive though.. I have an ingersoll rand gun that was around $350 that has insane torque and is very light weight, I've used it partically every day for the past 5 years now and it still works like new.. you get what you pay for.. just make sure you have a good enough compressor to run it. If you don't have access to a good torch set a little parts store propane torch may help.

I never really though about the WD40 being the reason for stripping bolt heads, today alone i stripped two, lol but i have some PB blaster now so hopefully ill be seeing a change in that.

the last straw for me was when i snapped a brake caliper bolt and had to replace the whole spindle after i tried cutting, drilling and helicoiling the old one to no success

I've only read about kroil, around here everyone swears up and down by pb blaster and thats buffalo mechanics we know stuck bolts. I've never seen kroil available at a store i hear you can only order it online. I've even heard it may be better than pb i'd really like to test that myself. A good penetrating spray is as valuable a tool as anything in your box IMO unless you got a torch. I wish i had a torch, i think i might buy one

Buffalo area here too. I've had a decent amount of experience with rusted bolts (mainly on the trucks the bird never sees snow). First I try my crappy impact gun that came with my compressor, then the longest breaker bar I can fit into the area. If that doesn't work, I use PBB and the breaker bar. After that I have my "beater" breaker bar and wrench set, I get it firm on the bolt, and whack the handle with a 3 pound hammer several times in a row. This last one works EVERY TIME so long as the head doesn't snap off (happened once in the past 5 years) and as long as the socket/wrench head is the EXACT size (no "close enough in metric" business). If the hammer doesn't work, I use a MAPP torch (just like a propane torch but gets hotter, used in plumbing mostly, sold everywhere pretty cheap) and when the bolt is hot I go back to the hammer/breaker bar technique. Haven't met one I couldn't beat yet. (Have swore at some for an hour or so though).
I have heard that if you heat the bolt with a torch and then touch it with wax (i.e.bee's wax) the wax will work down into the threads and the bolt will come right out. I have never done it, or seen it done, but I hear of it every now and then.
I kid you not, but we had a big flywheel off a tractor driven wood spliter that had to be removed. (keyed onto a shaft, retaining bolt was removed, just trying to beat the flywheel off) Well it hadn't been removed in probably 30 years. Tried some wd40, nothing, found some pb, that didnt help. got the kroil stuff out, put it on, and within 3 hits it started to move, 6 had it off. It could have been the longer wait time inbetween of the different penetrants, or just the mixture of the three, but it made a believer out of me of Kroil.
I usually get it where I work, but if any of you ever get the chance to pick up a can of it, try it, you wont be disapointed.
