What size tires will give a 86 z28 that mean look.

alright so i learned a bit more. right now my camaro is sitting on stock 16x7 wheels. i wanna run a fatter tire on the back. would a 15x8 on the back and 15x4 or 15x6 on the front be right?? then just get the front coils/springs cut, or buy a tire with a shorter wall? will 15x8 stick out the side of the car or will it be parallel to the body like the stock ones?
oh yea, and i forgot to mention, imtrying to get it to sit at a angle. lower in the front and higher in the back.

thanks.

Re: What size tires will give a 86 z28 that mean look.

I'm running 245/55/16's on 4th gen wheels with two inch wheel spacers on my 92 firebird and i like the look. they stick out to the edge of the wheel wells and i dont think they would look good any further out. i dont think the fronts could be any wider without major rubbing but if i had it to do over i think i'd put wider tires on the back. they measure about 9 inches wide with a tape measure.
I've got some pics you can look at in my vb garage that were taken before i lowered the car two inches.

do a search on here there are many articles about this and you'll find what your looking for

Re: What size tires will give a 86 z28 that mean look.

Depends on the backspacing of the wheel & if you wanna/are willing to any mods to fit the tire.

I've got 285s rear, I've run 295s before with zero mods, and 315s are possible, with minimal trimming or none with the right backspaced wheel.

What looks mean is 315s on all four corners but I don't think that would track very well.

I take it you're looking for that drag look?

yea im not to sure one the whole 3 digit numbers your naming, but if im correct, you are refering to how big the tires wall is?

so placeing my trust in you guys ill let you decide what size i get. im gonna run 15x4 in the front and 15x7 or 15x8. and i want the wheels to fill the wheel well as much as possible and have noticeable tilt.
so what size??

No...The 3 digit #s are tire width, not sidewall height. The 2 digit # is the height, expressed in a % number.

As in.....285/40ZR17....
285mm wide
40% sidewall height (40% of 285)
Z-speed rating
R17 rim size

For a 15 x 8....Try around a 275/50ZR15

The 275 you can adjust up or down. Use Tirerack.com to compare tires to each other, or find a good guy at a good local tire store.

Generally, NTB has AT LEAST one good guy there who can help you out deciding on what fits best.

You want size? Go 15x10s for the rears...You won't regret it AT ALL.

ME? 9"/9.5" wide fronts with 285s. But I like to turn hard. Try turning hard with 4" fronts & your just leaving black marks while sliding forward.

haha i never thought about that. Well i did wanna run 5" in the front but the rims im buying only come in a 4". If i run 8" in the back, do you think it'll stick out the side of the wheel well?

The backspacing will determine that. I've got 9" wide, could get 10" with zero mods, maybe 10.5"....11" with minimal mods....All the while sitting inside the fender lip by 3/4".

I can't believe this question is being asked....The metric system is corrupting our way of life!

Nowadays, offset is becoming the 'norm'.

Offset is super simple & ONE calculation. The measurement from the back edge to the rim mounting surface.

Offset. The distance from the centerline of the wheel to the face of the mounting surface of the wheel that contacts the hub.

Zero Offset. Indicates the mounting surface is at the wheel center.

Negative Offset. Indicates the mounting surface is behind (or inboard) the centerline of the rim. This is often found on standard rear-wheel-drive vehicles and on so-called reversed rims. (Diagram below shows negative offset)

Positive Offset. Indicates the mounting surface is in front of (or outboard) the centerline of the rim. This is often found on front- wheel-drive vehicles. Stock Tacoma wheels have Positive offset.

Backspacing. The distance from the mounting surface to the inside lip of the wheel.

so a 15x10 with a 5.5backspacing will fit like stock, or close to stock as far as how much they stick out? or 15x8 with 4.5 backspacing??

Re: What size tires will give a 86 z28 that mean look.

I've got a set of 275/50/15's (about 25.75x11x15) on 15x8 rims with 4.5" backspace, and the tread of my tires are about even with the top of the fender. So, the sidewall is just a tad out. Your car probably doesn't need any taller of a tire as far as traction and gear ratio goes, but 275/60/15's (about 27.75x11x15) fit equally as well. I personally wouldn't like more backspace, but you could do the same setup with a 15x8 wheel on a 5.5" backspace just to bump them in an inch. As soon as they're available, I'm going to switch over to a 325/50/15 (about 27.8x13x15) on a set of 15x10's with 6.5" backspace. I will have to do some massaging, but I want more traction. For the fronts, I'd just get whatever is 24-25 inches tall or so. I'm running a set of BFG t/a's that are 155/80/15 (about 24.5x6x15)

yea, the 15x10 with a 6.5 backspacing will fit pretty well with little alterations right? and correct me if im wrong, still fit like a stock tire?
i just measured mine and im pretty sure its a 16x8 with a 4inch backspacing. is that correct for stock third gens? do your 275/50/15's fill the wheel well fully, or atleast enough to where it doesnt look bad?
and thanks again for all the help.

Well, the front 2 were 4", the rear 2 woulda been 4 3/4" Add 1/4" for the lip for 4.25" & 4.9" (call it 5").

haha possibly. jegs drag lights im putting on only come in 15x4 15x7 15x8 and 15x10. people suggest 275/50/15 so i think thats what im running on the back, to my understanding thats like ten inches in width.
now i need suggestions for the front? 15x4 or 15x7

No...Just the rim. Tire bulge is up to YOU to determine, based on WHAT TIRE you choose.

I would honestly go with the 15X7's for a daily driver. Get a little meat up front for practicality. That's just me though.

Re: What size tires will give a 86 z28 that mean look.

I run a 15X8.5 in the back, and a 15X4 in the front. The tires are a 275/50-15 rear. And a 165/65-15 front. I dont have any problems, even in the snow. I picked the 275/50-15 because it is close to the factory size, and wouldnt mess up the speedo. I wish I would have bought the 275/60, or a 295/50. The rear tires are actually a little short for that aggressive look I like.

If you would like more pictures, I have a few. Most are before the paint job though.

No problems, but you have to remember, they arent very wide. They will roll off the rim if you get stupid. I havent had that happen, but I drive like a little old man 99% of the time.

Ill PM the pictures.

go to car domain.com and pull up pictures till you find the look you like. If it doesn't say what they are, message the owner and ask. Some sweet rides on there.
