custom, FUNCTIONAL front lip? ( non-body kit)

Right, so...

I'm looking to start some serious work on my '92 in a year or two and getting the plans laid early. One thing I'm looking to do is instal a new front lip that would bring the bottom edge down parallel with the side skirts. The goal is to eventually add a smooth undertray to the car and create usable down force. I do however want to keep the body as stock looking as possible, the car currently has stock RS ground effects (pictured below).

My question then,

Does anyone know of an aftermarket lip that would fit these needs? Or are there any attatchment sold to lengthen the stock lip that don't look like some Kmart honda mod?

Thanks.

Re: custom, FUNCTIONAL front lip? ( non-body kit)

I filled in the underside of the front of my Camaro using PVC sheeting back as far as the end of the front spoiler as it wraps around the side. It attaches to homemade clips that are screwed to the lip of the chin spoiler. I have a window cut out in it to retain the spoiler under the radiator support that forces air into the radiator (since our cars are bottom feeders).

Re: custom, FUNCTIONAL front lip? ( non-body kit)

As far as the front spoiler goes, the stock one likes to fold downward at around 120-130 mph. I filled in the back of mine with fiberglass (Tiger hair and resin) and eliminated that issue. As far as actual downforce (Front) I tried the same thing Lonsal did, using 14 gauge Aluminum and actually lost 7mph off of my top speed, I believe, due to more aerodynamic drag. (The car did run cooler, though) A nascar-style front splitter may help with front downforce. I actually have more problems with rear stability than front, though.

I dont mean this as a joke, but after reading your post, and having gone 140 or so; now I understand why my chin spoiler was folding in. I was wondering if that had been why and wanted to do something to make it a bit more rigid.

Re: custom, FUNCTIONAL front lip? ( non-body kit)

That is probably the reason, resinlake. I have been going down the freeway and seen the front spoiler (Airdam) on these cars being pushed down at 70 mph. Gm made them out of a soft material for durability against curbs and dips. The downside of that is that a soft material bends easily. Reinforcing the back of it with fiberglass has its downside too, in that it will not be durable against curbs or dips!! LOL, you cant win, can you? Its a really easy mod, just make sure you sand the backside really good and do it with the spoiler on the car. Make sure the spoiler is in the exact shape you want it to be as it wont be flexible anymore, after it sets.
Sorry if I'm threadjacking. I dont mean to.
Good luck!

How about doing a fiberglass or carbon fiber piece like that on the new Cup Cars with adjustable struts/rods?

It's not a bad Idea, resinlake. The only issue is that they get damaged easily, but as far as I can tell, they work. A couple of guys in my midnight club have them. One of them was pushing 180+ with it and no damage.

Well, the thread has been hijacked/modified but definitely a great idea for a piece. Hmm, sounds like a good winter project. Now I have something to definitively research and put together, not just talk about it but really do it; for this thread! I'm thinking a camaro/transam sitting lower to the ground with that type of chin spoiler would look pretty sweet. I'd be taking all driveways and over gutters at extreme angles though for sure, and if not possible park in the street or a parking lot near by. Sweet.

Re: custom, FUNCTIONAL front lip? ( non-body kit)

nice, yeah I had been thinking along the lines of glass/carbon fiber but was wondering if there was an aftermarket outfit a few steps ahead of me.

aside from rigidity though, I'd like to extend the front edge down closer to the ground as well, so reinforcing the stock piece would not help that. And yes I am well aware that would forever ban myself from anywhere with speed bumps or extra steep driveways...but who likes those kind of places anyways?

Cool idea and I think it would look really badass. Defently not a mod for a daily driver but would be really sweet on a weekend warrior/show car

That's awesome, Id really be interested to know what something like that goes for in the retail for sure. In between things today I've spent my time looking at the car and thinking about the possibilities. Ahh, luxo blue front spoiler with black adjustable rods, sweeet.

Edit 10/28---

Just found this site, and it says they'll make one to fit just about any car. It's $340 for a dodge neon srt-4. Comes with 2 strainless Rods and is reinforced with sheets of carbon fiber. Hmm I'm wondering if its adjustable.
