91 Firebird Electric Windows Motor

Ok, I read the Tech article on replacing the the window motor. I drilled the 4 rivits as explained had my son hold the window. All of a sudden the Motor begin to lift as if it was spring loaded. At that point I began to have problems getting the sissor type piece out of the tracks and the half moon shape gear appeared to fall to the bottom of the door shell. At this point the window has fallen all the way down. I pull up on the window to get it out of the way and try to pull the whole assembly out as directed and I find a big coiled spring in the bottom of the door shell. At this point I have stopped trying to get the assy. out. It appears that the entire assy is loose but I can not get the assy. out. My question is, If I can finally get all the assy. out, how and where does the big spring go? This job read to not that bad of a job but I cussed and tore up my hands and arms for 2 hours and still haven't replaced the motor.

Any help would be appreciated or off it goes to the body shop.

too bad you didn't see this post first:

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/bo...tall-easy.html (Window motor install.......THE EASY WAY....the tech article is bogus!)

seems a LOT easier than the factory way and makes sense. I plan on doing this on my car very soon, so this info posted in that thread is great. keep it mind for the other side.

Re: 91 Firebird Electric Windows Motor

Finally got the assy out, replaced the motor and was able to re-install the coil spring. I then was able to get the the whole assy back in and mounted. and the window now is working. I will have to say that this job was a PITA. I will soon be doing the passenger side and hope it goes better than this one.

Re: 91 Firebird Electric Windows Motor

It is a round flat spiral shaped spring that is connected to the regulator. While the motor is still connected to the regulator it is under a load. When you remove the motor if the regulator is not locked, the spring will unload and it is not a pretty site.
Make sure you lock the regulator, I used a large screw driver and poked it through the large hole on the regulator to keep the spring from unloading while I changed out the motor. It worked for me.
