So I got fed up, and went and bought a new hood for my Trans Am..

It's from a 1989 Formula.. I kid you not, there is 4 different paint jobs, so it's taking me a while to strip them off... I've just got a spot about 2' by 1' to go.. But here's a pic from yesterday..

I should have it done by the weekend (I work fast, if I'm not working on it, I'm thinking about it) So here's a quick picture!

EDIT : I'm using TalStrip II Aircraft coating stripper.. Damn does it burn.

Re: So I got fed up, and went and bought a new hood for my Trans Am..

I'm changing hoods because mine looks like garbage... To me anyway.. It's got a bunch of dings I missed, and it almost seems like it's twisted, because it doesn't match up with the pass. fender good, it sits almost a 1/4" down..

The old hood is going to the guy I got the Formula hood from, he wants the car for a winter beater, and thats why I got my hood for $60.

I got it to bare metal, on the surface, and underneath. I undercoated where the fiberglass insulation goes, and primed all around the outside. The top will be primed with Urethane primer, and I'm using Dolphin glaze self leveling body filler as my putty. Here's some pics of it stripped, and wire wheeled.

Re: So I got fed up, and went and bought a new hood for my Trans Am..

It was a slow day at work today (I live 20 steps from where I work) So I got alot done.. It's in urethane prime now, 2 very heavy coats of it, so it fills in the low spots, a little bit of filling to do, but not much.

In the 2nd picture, I have an arrow pointing at what I mean about the hood being twisted, it fits nice near the windshield, but as it follows the body line down the fender it drops down 1/4". I think I'm too picky, but I've got alot of hours in this car to just ignore stuff like that, especially if I want to hang on to the car.. How do you like those $17 Trans Am Decals from eBay, nice, eh?

Re: So I got fed up, and went and bought a new hood for my Trans Am..

I wish I went this fast when I fixed up my car... Anyway, I got the hood wet sanded, made the screen for the insert, installed the insert, flipped the hood, wet sanded the bottom and will be ready to paint when the water dries in about... 30 - 45 minutes.. I should have the top surface painted tonight if everything goes right...

Re: So I got fed up, and went and bought a new hood for my Trans Am..

Painted underside, and added the fiberglass insulation, safety latch, and spring. I painted the latch and spring black, I didn't want to mix up more paint so I saved some time, I think it looks better like that, anyway.. I ran into some trouble with my primer gun on the upper surface, I now have quite a bit of sanding to do around the insert, damn thing... I had 2 little spots to fill, so we'll see how my body work turns out.. It's been a while.
