New Hinges?

my drivers side door creaks when i open it, and when it is fully open and i try to shut it the door fights back a little like it is stuck then there is a loud popping noise and the door comes very fast because i have to use a fair amount of effort to get it past. it almost feels like there is a bump that the door has to get over. so im wondering if it is really the hinges or if it just needs to be greased up.
thank you for your help

Re: New Hinges?

The bushings are probably shot...very common because the doors weigh a ton. New kits are available from a variety of sources. I would go with the ones that replace the two half-pins with a full pin, I believe available on e-bay

Re: New Hinges?

i think that the door is sagging because its rubbing on the side skirt where the hinge is.
is this the kit that you are talking about?

Re: New Hinges?

Yes, those are the ones I was thinking of. I cannot vouch for them personally, but I would think they are a better solution than the greaseable ones that Year One or Classic Industries sell. My dad was playing around with this problem and he feels that the single straight pin connecting the upper and lower portions of the hinge is a better design engineering wise than replacing it with what was already there. In theory, because the stock half-pins aren't connected, the upper and lower portions of the hinge are able to move separately, or are more prone to move separately. I haven't exactly done testing on this but it seems to make sense. Best way to check if your bushings are shot, open your door 3/4, grab it from the end and wiggle it up and down on the hinge. If there is slop and the door moves separately from the car, you need new bushings. If the whole car moves immediately and there is no slop, then you have alignment issues. Usually you can tell if the bushings are really gone because when you open the door, it seems to 'fall' open.

Re: New Hinges?

You need to look at the roller and the arm on the hinge that holds the door open. Thats usually where the tension and the loud pop comes from. I believe the roller and pin are available new and should be done when you do the hinge pins and bushings.

Re: New Hinges?

the roller and arm seems to be the culprit here. im pretty sure my bushings are doing fine though because it seems to stay in one place and there is not a lot of movement between the door and the body. ill probably just replace all the door hardware anyways to just get it over with and not have to worry about it later on.
any suggestions on where i could find a pin and roller kit?
