polycarbonate windows

maybe im losing it, but arent glass windows covered by a film from the factory on both sides? and they dont scratch, so why cant they coat polycarbonate windows with this same film so we could buy them for daily drivers? or has this already been done? ive searched but cant find anything.. any thoughts?

Re: polycarbonate windows

To my knowledge, automotive glass has the film in between the two layers of glass. Ever seen a broken windshield? Notice how it'll bend with the film.

There are scratch free plastics, but I think the cost would probably outweigh the bennifit. I also think that poly windows aren't DOT approved either. That's probably the main reason people aren't running them. Putting a large tear off on the window (basicly a protective film) would go along way against scratches.

Re: polycarbonate windows

The main reason a plastic window is not dot legal is how much flex they have and have to bolt it in.which in a crash the window can't pop out or break like the glass ones. You ever had a rock hit your windshield if it was plastic it would bust right through or make the window flex enough to break its mounts.

Re: polycarbonate windows

You might want to check your state first make sure its legal to do so.The weight is not really a problem its in the back of the car.I would be more worried about weight balance this does effect the handling the traction and braking.
