Hi i have a 91 trans am i have two questions. i was just wonderin does anyone know what was the lightest thirden year for firebirds is? and if the thirdgens are lighter then first, second and forth gen models of the firebird? Thanks, Gary

The first gen was the lightest 2nd lightest is a close one between a 2nd and 3rd gen but the 4th gen is the heaviest with all the safety stuff and power everything is all weight.

There is no way the first gen was the lightest..

These numbers I'm posting are from the book Standard Catalog of Firebird by John Gunnel. Not every model in the book had the weights listed but this is what I found. I know not everyone will take these as fact since some of them seem off to me aswell.

Lightest of each generation

1967 Base Firebird OHC-six 2d sport coupe ship weight: 2,995 lbs.
1970 Base Firebird OHV-six 2d sport coupe " 3,140 lbs.
1982 Base Firebird OHV-four 2d hatchback " 2,750 lbs.
1996 Base Firebird OHV-six 2d hatchback " 3,131 lbs.

And just for kicks the heaviest of each generation...

1967 Firebird 400 2d convertible 3,855 lbs. later 1st gen vert #'s missing
1977 Firebird T/A 403 special edition 3,850 lbs.
1989 Firebird GTA 3,519 lbs.
1997 Firebird T/A convertible 3,610 lbs.

It should be noted that these are "shipping weights". IIRC the numbers listed above are the baseline for cars that have no options.

the thing that i find interesting is that the lightest and heaviest cars were first and second gen cars. this tells me that they came from the factory with fewer standard options, giving the buyer the ability to add what they want.
the weight differnce in the third gen was only 769 lb between the heaviest and the lightest
first gens were 860 lb difference
fourth were only 479 lb difference
seems like a trend to me for sure
