Can you chemically strip a bumper?

My SEARCH feature isn't working and I'm looking to see if you can strip the paint off the nose and bumper off the third gens using aircraft stripper or something like that? I've got an extra nose I can strip and prime to get ready to go on the car. Is this just a sanding only type deal?

Not sure why paint stripper wouldn't work. I believe sanding is more preffered and easier since you basically just scuff up old paint. Does your bumper have severe spider cracking? That would probably just require deeper sanding.

I've used aircraft stripper on mine but be careful. Do small sections at a time because it will eat the bumper if left on too long.

Re: Can you chemically strip a bumper?

I tried using paint stripper when I was doing the bodywork on my old 83, but it wound up not really working well. Rather than cleanly taking the paint off, it just took off patches, and bubbled the hell out of it. I wound up sanding it down anyways. Also, don't get it on any plastic, such as the license plate light lens, etc. It will eat it in a hurry.

Re: Can you chemically strip a bumper?

I would just sand it. If it has any spider cracking maybe use some glazing putty as well after sanding and sand the putty smooth before primer. A good filler/sandable primer will be fine after sanding. I wouldn't use stripper on them...not that you can't if you're careful I just don't see the need.

Yes, got to your local autobody supply, they sell bumper stripper. Works pretty well.
