Re: Totaled Car, Ideas?

Had a relative total their RS similar to your car. They had it trailered to Tijuana and had another front end welded on. Not a bad job if you ask me. But this was years ago. Maybe you can get a donor car with a wrecked rear end and have the front end installed. I am sure you should have some good decent shops out where you are at. If you love your car enough, you will sacrafice a little. Money provided of course.

i would just cut your losses and start over because the price to fix would be more than the car is worth.

I agree with 92 Rally, its not worth it. What I would do is find another car like yours or so, and swap all your good stuff into it. I guess that would be the best idea.

Tony.

Re: Totaled Car, Ideas?

Time for another car. Spend $3500 and you can get a v8 3rd gen that is newer, looks better and runs solid. There's too many nice examples for sale to bother dumping money into a totaled wreck.

Cut the front end off and make it into a trike? Heheh you asked for ideas.

No really either part it or take the insurance money and start with something newer and cleaner.

Re: Totaled Car, Ideas?

$3500? Wow - you guys spend alot up front for cars!

I paid $900 for my 1992 RS with V8 TBI 305 - all it needed was an oil pressure regulator and a battery charging, and a small dent in the rear quarter fixed.

My 1990 RS I paid $500 for, it needed motor mounts and a muffler, and a new door (but the door shut fine, was just crunched). I bought a 1985 Z28 for $300 for parts and fixed the door issue, and parted out the Z28 to pay for itself!

Unless we're talking a really nice vert, I'd never give more than $1000 for any 3rd Gen. But I understand it depends on area alot sometimes.

I'd pass on fixing that, and find another - like was mentioned, grab your best stuff out of it, and hold it for another 3rd gen to start on.

And I'm glad you are OK!

Ouch. Take the Insurance money and run. It's totaled beyond anything that should be repaired at this time. If you can take off anything that in good shape to either put on whatever you buy or to sell for some extra $$.

Ouch is right. Thank goodness you are okay though. I would part whatever is remaining out and start all over again. I mean, it can be fixed, but its really not worth your time and money, unless maybe for sentimental reasons....

Take the insurance settlement, then ask the insurance company how much to buy back the wreck - I bought back a "Totaled" Jetta for $230 to part it out.....Then as mentioned take off anything that in good shape to either put on whatever you buy or to sell for some extra $$.

Im interested in a few parts off it if you do part it, Ive got an 84 too.......

Re: Totaled Car, Ideas?

How does that work if there is only liability on the car and lets say its the owners fault with a one vehicle accident and hits a tree?
Does the insurance company pay anything on the vehicle or is it all out of pocket? Have never been caught in that situation. Most of the time where it was my fault I never even went to the insurance company to keep my record clean. Took the loss out of my own pocket. But that was years ago before liability was a requirement.

Liability on the car you get jack. Now if you had comp maybe. Full coverage you would get money but liability sorry to say cut your losses.

Alot of insurance company's, at least some of the ones ive talked to, won't provide full coverage on cars older than ten years.LAME.

CSIMPSON1 sorry bout your car, it always sucks when you lose your car, it's like losing a good friend.

Re: Totaled Car, Ideas?

WOW

Thanks for all of the ideas and replies guys. I really wanna part it out, help out the other 3rd Gen-ers. lol. but im not accelerated on the shipping and stuff, so not sure how to do that. I will figure out how much the insurance is going to give to me, and go from there. If its a good amount, they can have it, but i really would like to get another 3rd gen. It was an amazing car, and i recently dumped A LOT of money and effort and time and blood into that car. and it is true. similar to losing a best friend. Gunna miss it, but it will help me in the long run to getting a new one.

But as previously mentioned, thanks everyone for your ideas, even the trike idea, LOL... and it rolled about 20 feet into a ditch afterwards, or maybe thats when it was airborne..hmmm
Thanks guys

Yeah take the money, buy it back, and part the remains.

If you want you can just find a solid roller on TGO and swap your drivetrain into it.
