is the hatch two piece?

I have an 87 GTA and I need to replace both the spoiler and the trunk lid that it mounts to. I was told it is probably not repairable. Does the metal trunk lid just bolt to the glass hatch from under the cover? It's my daily driver so I can't just rip it apart and leave it. Thanks

the trunk lid is bolted and sealed. It is removable but the sealant will probably be a bit of a challenge to remove. You will want to unhook the lift supports as well prior to removing that section, but make sure you have something to support the glass, as its VERY heavy when it hits your head.

To add to it. After the bolts are removed you should be able to lift up the assembly. If it's cool enough you can actually cut the sealant with a box cutter while it's under tension. I don't recall what sealant they use but you might want to locate that as well before so that you have it on hand when you swap it.
