As the title reads, i need to figure out how to open the hatch on an 82 z28, and the motor is shot, so it needs to get open for fixing.

Use the key. Just kidding. Check the fuse. May be burnt out. It's usually the ACCESORY fuse depending on the previous owner (can be the LID fuse aswell. Also if your hatch panels are removed or can be removed, there is a little slot where an aftermarket key cylinder shaft gets inserted to turn the lock to open. But if you dont have access to assembly, Then visit a locksmith. They will charge you but you'll get it open.

Hmm okay, ill give the fuses a try. I could fit in the back of the hatch and try and remove some panels to get at it.

it wont even release it??

Basically, i have no idea whats up with it, got the car month or two ago, back has ice in it, so tried popping it with the button, no go at all, tried the key, no go at all, not even a single noise.

With the hatch glass down, you wont be able to remove the panel because there are I think 2 or 4 screws right at the striker plates, which are covered by the closed hatch glass.

Thats pretty bummer, ill go out and look at the fuses, bb in a few

Does the car have a hatch release button on the console? Is it an auto or a manual trans? If it's manual it needs to have the ebrake engaged to pop the trunk, and autos need to be in park.

Wooo, it was the fuse, it wasnt ASSESSORY or whatever, it was worn out and said like CLU something. But it pops, is there a up/down motor on 82's? so you dont have to slam it, it glides shut.

Did you try opening it with the round head key for the doors. Hatch lock is located behind the folding down license plate holder.

I got it working, changed the fuse, works good now

If your lock assembly looks like this
Then no, you have to slam it shut.

1986 was the first year for the pull down hatch motor. You have to close the hatch by yourself on the 82-85 cars.
