The most ridiculous hinge hack job ever

My doors sag roughly 3" when open. I knew from a quick glance that the bushings are both worn, not seated, or missing depending on which hinge pin you checked.
I ordered some hinge pin kits from andyz28 and got to work this afternoon replacing them.

The bottom pin bushing holes are so stretched out that the bushings don't even ATTEMPT to stay in place. They flop around and fall right out.

The upper pin is just flat out wrong. At first glance it looks like a lower pin has been improperly fitted in place of the original 2 smaller pins. Its actually a piece of steel rod with gobs of weld between the ends of the hinges to hold it in place. I began by cutting the rod in half and started pounding each half out. I then noticed that the top and bottom bushing holes have been filled with weld and then hogged out so that a lower pin bushing would fit in the hole.

The crap I've found done to this car so far disgusts me. Everything has been completely hacked and is both hard on the eye and dangerous. Now I'm on the hunt for an entire door, not just replacing bushings and pins.

Well the good news is there are lots of doors..

maybe while you're at it try to find one with less door dings than what you have. Im dreading the process of straightening out my doors for repainting.

That's true, there are tons of doors out there. The skin itself is in great shape, not that it matters. I've found one that I'm going to pick up tomorrow after work.

Re: The most ridiculous hinge hack job ever

how hard of a job is it to do in the first place? My boys rs is all original, but well worn out. I have never done this so I'm skeptical... The two hinges are completely different sizes. and the top hinge the pins to replace it are not long enough. The original does not have the pin on the top. it is two 1/2 to 3/4 inch "rivets" for lack of a better term. Is this right? You just replace the rivets with pins? And finally the pins need to be longer than the hinge... by?? 1/2 inch?? Mine are flush... no room for retaining clip. Do I have the wrong ones? Thanks

Re: The most ridiculous hinge hack job ever

It's not a hard job, but its definitely easier if you have a second pair of hands to help. You are correct about the hinges, the top hinge has 2 "rivets" that have to be removed in order to replace the worn out bushings. the bottom hinge has 1 long pin that extends all the way through both sides of the hinge.

Here's a picture of what someone actually installed in my upper hinge in place of the rivets. It's just a length of rod with tack welds on it to prevent it from falling out. I first tried to drill through it to drive it out without realizing the tacks were in the way. Total garbage repair that probably caused worse sagging than the original worn out bushings.
