Re: About to paint my 82 Trans Am,looking for a nice super/triple black paint code.

Black is black is black is black. Even after the next 10 posts of "no they're not" and "most black's have a blue tint" and various other boorish responses, black is still black. I've yet to meet someone that can tell me what paint manufacturer produces which black when looking at a car. Perhaps you'd be able to tell the difference side by side, but even then it'd be difficult. Get a black from a reputable line and vendor and you'll be fine.

Re: About to paint my 82 Trans Am,looking for a nice super/triple black paint code.

Check out Barry's stuff at SPI, basecoats all the way on the bottom:

http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/Pricing%20Info.htm

I use his products exclusively. Very reasonably priced and high quality stuff. I have not yet used his black but have used the red base coat and it's as red as red gets. If that is any indication his black will be a true black. It took him a very long time to bring back a black base coat while he rejected batch after batch until he had what he would accept as a true black and could produce the same color on a consistent basis.

It's not my intention to make this sound like an advertisement for SPI, but it's good stuff. By the way, I have no interest nor do I benefit in any way from SPI.

A lot of the "factory pack" blacks do have a reddish or brownish look to them. I went with the PPG DBC 9700 black. It's a very deep black.

I'm also using the ppg dbc 9700. Very black. Ppg has 2 blacks apparently , this one is described as having bluish shade, the other was described as a brownish shade. I'll get some pics of the parts I've one so far.

The original code 19 GM black is a nice pure black. I just had my car painted and it is just black. There are no tints, metallics, or anything else in it. I would order it to that code no matter where you buy it.

I'm on the side of "not all blacks" are the same... especially side by side...
Side by side, the blacks that have blue also look "blacker" than blacks with brown's or just black... I'm actually going with the PPG 9300 single stage acrylic which is the "triple black" that has the blue in it... do a google search to learn about "warm / brown" and "cold ./ blue" colors in black and their effect on why "cold" black looks blacker then the rest...

Looks nice... want to sell those wheels?

If it's "just black", it will not look as black or darker than a car that has black with blue / violet and other cold colors mixed in...

No- unfortunately I do not have the facilities to do the paint work myself. I had an awesome painter - he is just slow as molasses. It has been almost a year long process and the car still needs final assembly. It also decided to start running like crap so I have to figure out what is wrong with the ceasefire injection.

I definitely can relate when it comes to a slow-*** painter. My car has been out of town and at a body shop for a year and 2 months now. Needless to say, I'm pretty freakin' PISSED!!!

Sorry, rafael is right, I was GOING to use the 9700 but went with 9300 after I was informed it was the "bluer" black.

Re: About to paint my 82 Trans Am,looking for a nice super/triple black paint code.

Listed below are the toners for both the 9300 and the 9700 bc/cc and single stage. May have these flip-flopped, so bear with me. Been a while since I used PPG.

9300
Code Description Abs. ***. Grams Parts
DMD1683 BLACK 486.2 486.2 911.2 100.00

9700
Code Description Abs. ***. Grams Parts
DMD1683 BLACK 486.2 486.2 911.2 100.00

You can see see that both mixes use the exact same toner. So they're the exact same color.

9700
Code Description Abs. ***. Grams Parts
DMC921 JET BLACK 524.1 524.1 982.2 98.13
DMC934 VIOLET 10.0 534.1 18.8 1.87

9300
Code Description Abs. ***. Grams Parts
DMC921 JET BLACK 533.0 533.0 998.9 99.80
DMC934 VIOLET 1.1 534.1 2 0.20

The single stage uses two toners, the same two toners, and are different by less than one percent. 9700 uses 16 more grams of violet than 9300.

I can assure that you'd never see the difference.

Re: About to paint my 82 Trans Am,looking for a nice super/triple black paint code.

If your looking for a deep dark black than be sure you add nothing extra like “black pearl” any pearl for that matter and defiantly not a metallic of any kind. I had a “pro” at his shop paint mine “red” with PPG also but we customized the paint and came up with a really deep red and at the last moment he asked if I wanted a “crystal red pearl”in it.We shot a few cards with it and it looked really good so I did it and it turned out “BEAUTIFUL”, but I believe the pearl took away some of the depth of the paint and it lighted the red a bit. Any way just thought I would mention it.

Just a wonderful wonderful information, I'm glad I started the thread I was in the automotive repair/auto body business, but unfortunately just went out of business, so I need to hunt around for a body guy in New York. But great stuff guys, just amazing !

Any updates on this... Pics?

I'm still planning the PPG 9300 single stage...
I just redid my black interior via SEM Palomino (tan) and having my seats redone from black to tan also... Got some wiring things to do then paint...Hopefully this year...

Re: About to paint my 82 Trans Am,looking for a nice super/triple black paint code.

just finishing paining my stripped chassis. i used por15 in the wheels wells, radiator support, battery tray and top and bottom of the floors. everything else on the underside as well as engine bay and rear bulkhead were done with dcc9300 single stage. I'm doing the windshield frame, ttop bar roof and quarters with ppg bc/cc black. also bc/cc on all other body panels like hood doors, hatch, fenders. the single stage is fine, but little harder to lay down without orange peel, thats why i used it in places that don't show much.
when i went to buy the base coat black i was looking for dbc9300, they sold me dmd 1684 saying it was the same thing. i thought this was a little weird since dmd anything is not listed anywhere on ppg's website. the directions for the deltron base color have a different reduction ratio for dbu9700. so i called ppg. they said that 9300, 9700, dmd 1684 are all exactly the same thing and to follow the instructions for the dbu9700. i told them that i found a huge amount of confusion on this issue online on all kinds of forums, including body professional forums and asked why they have it listed three different ways. there response was "i don't know"/ i suggested they change that. they said "well look into it".
anyway...
for the single stage i used black dplf epoxy primer first, covered just fine.
for the bc/cc the instructions specifically say to use a sealer before black base coat. i sprayed the black epoxy primer first and found that yes it doesn't cover completely so i got the deltron sealer ncs2005 (black). it covers well in only one coat. in fact, its so black and lays down so nice i think you could just clear right over it and have a decent black paint job. i did 2 coats of dmd1684 (black base coat) then 2 coats of DCU2021 clear. i like this clear as it dries slower allowing it to flatten nicely for minimal orange peel.
here are some pics, ill get some better ones up when the quarters are done.

Ok... I found a "blacker" black
It makes the car look 2 dimensional, like a cartoon almost... would like to see it out on the street vs a studio..
