abandoned vehicle

i'm not sure if this post fits this board, but it kinda deals with body and interior. my uncle asked me if i was still looking for body parts for the gfx conversion, cuz there's a third gen camaro rs in some parking lot. he talked to the owner of the building, and the guy said it's been sitting there for years, and he could take it. my uncle said it's in pretty good shape, it's a v6 though. i'm gonna take a look at it tomorrow. i was thinking of taking it, using the parts i need, and selling anything else on ebay. i know i can legally take it since it's abandoned property, but i was just wondering if anyone knows how i would get a title for it so i could junk it when i'm done.

Thats tricky stuff. My dads friend was in a similar situation with a truck. The truck was sitting in a complex parking lot for 3 years. Eventually the owner of the lot decided to dump it so he had his buddy, a tow guy grab it . Turns out besides the fact the truck was considered abandoned and had two year old tags it was insured and the owner noticing his truck was gone called the cops turrned his truck in as stolen and got a big fat insurance check even though his vehical was considered by all to be abandoned.
Proper way to do it is to get a storafge lean on the car ($800) and then file for the title.

Ok now story and law obiding time is over
Grab it, rip it, cut it into pieces and then take it to a scrap yard in many trips.

I've DEALT with something like this before. I was going to buy a car off a guy that he didn't have the title dah dah dah. I WOULD NOT recommend taking the car. I WOULD however take stuff OFF the car late at night. Because if the owner of this car HAS THE TITLE IT IS HIS CAR. If someone sees you taking this car and the owner finds out, You've just committed a fenoly. The car could be sitting there for 10 years but if you don't legally have the title or have gotten a lein, IT'S NOT YOUR CAR. The title IS the car. If it's not in YOUR hands, it's not yours. Even at a wrecking yard. . .If your engine blows and is towed to a wrecking yard, IT'S NOT THEIR CAR. IT'S STILL YOURS BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE TITLE. See? Ok, enouph with the crap. . .I would just go over there and take stuff off. Park a couple blocks away and get all you need. It doesn't matter if the car has been there for 50 years. If you don't have the title, DON'T take it. ANY cop or judge will tell you this.

Wait?!!!? You said it was abandoned property? How do you know that? If you take the car (and for all you know the guy could live across the street) and he still has the title he could sue you.

Ok, sorry but this is really bothering me. The only way this could be even halfway legal is if the car didn't have plates and the title was signed off and was somewhere in the car. You might want to check that. Then, the guy MEANT to abandon it. See? You can't just take a car. A car isn't a pair of shoes or a nice leather jacket on the church coat rack that has been left there for months. OK, final thought. . . DON'T JUST TAKE THE CAR. Maybe the guy works at that company, doesn't have a place to store it? What I'm trying to say is, you can't just take a car and make it yours. It's not. Even taking stuff off it wouldn't be right. But I don't blame you, I would too.

Man you guys are going to get this guy thrown in jail for all kinds of stuff. Go to the Court House and talk to the County Clerk's office and see what they say. Unless your name is on the title and/or you have a lien and a dang good reason you'd better not touch the car. Ever heard of receiving stolen property, theft, and even grand theft auto?

lol @ zepher. here's the deal, the car is in a laundromat parking lot. my uncle saw the car so he talked to the owner of the laundromat. the owner said that the car has been there for a few years with no one claiming it. now since whoever owns the car just left it there for a few years, that's long enough to consider it abandoned property. i took business law at school, and the teacher, who was a lawyer, went over an example exactly like this. since it's been sitting there for years, the owner is considered to have no intention of claiming title to it, or having discarded it. now whoever legally finds abandoned property gains legal title to it over anyone, including the original owner. i am going to call the law office of my old teacher, and ask her what advice she has on the situation. i'm probably just gonna bring my fathers truck down there and take all the gfx, any good interior parts, and maybe the rims if they're any good.

Have you been to the DMV to ask them? Bring the VIN# to see who the last owner was. Is VIN# redundant? OK, Bring the VIN. You may have to schmooze a little.

Ask them about abandoned property and salvage rights in your state. Most likely, the owner of the laudromat will be the one who can file for a new title in his name, then you could buy it from him.

I'd definately go for it, but cover your back.

When My friends parents moved to canada they left one of there cars and dindt care about it a 93 Cutlass international i think and the only thing that was wrogn with the car was it needed a new battery they left it with the keys in the ignition Well i went to the dmv and tried to get it transferd into my name and they said the only way i could do it is if the owenr of the car was there with me since i didnt have a pinkslip on it. I neer ended up gettint he car it woulda been nice to screw around in.

If you really need parts find a friend who isnt to bright and needs a fast buck and give him 20 bucks and the tools he needs and have him get the parts for you so that way he gets introuble and not you

Taking anything off the car is theft. Abandoned or not. The property owner should report it to the police and let them tow it away. What if the car was stolen from a member and has been sitting there for years. Wouldn't you feel like a jerk taking parts off their car? I hope so.

Off soap box now...

I agree, leave the car alone unless you can claim posession somehow LEAGALLY. Just think, every time you look at your car after you put those ground effects on, you will think, gee I stole those off that car, that was not mine.

I would not do it just because it is not right, no buts about it. If you can figure out a way to get a legal title to it its all yours.

I know that here in MI you can have the car impunded and then try to buy the car from the city/county or state whoever impounded it. Then it is leagally yours.

I bought a car off a junkyard that was attached to the city impound I got a clean title & everything.

John

I'm not saying that the illegal way isn't an option, but the legal way might not be too big of a hassle. Find out what happens to abandoned cars towed by the police in that town. They might take it to an impound yard if the car isn't considered abandoned yet, where it most likely will sit until the owner claims it or enough time passes that it is considered abandoned. At that point you can get access to it. Another possibility is that they have a junkyard that is contracted to take abandoned cars for them. Do your research first, it might not be as big of a hassle as it seems. Don't leave your name either because they'll be looking at you if the car disappears. If you decide to strip it where it is, bring a really good cordless drill with sockets and a socket drive bit.

ok, here's what happened. He got stopped by the cops, and probably arrested because he didn't have insurance and smelled like whiskey. Turns out there was a warrent for his arrest because he beat the crap out of somebody who made fun of his V6. He's getting out of jail tonight, and going to pick up his car, and you happen to be hooking a chain to it. Or the distributor cracked, and the poor bastid didnt' have enough money to tow it, or the sense to work on the car at night. Either way, leave the car where it is, and strip it like JJ the porn star.

Around here (Oklahoma), even the property owner cannot take the car or parts off of it because it belongs to someone else, & if they are deceased, then it belongs to their estate. Now, the property owner can call the police, but the easiest for the property owner is to call a wrecker himself & have it towed. The real owner of the car is responsible for tow bill, & if it is not picked up, the wrecker goes through a notification process (posted in newspaper/public), & they can then offer the car up for auction.

How would you feel if you walked out to you car and realized that you had no tires, stereo, or whatever. If you can't get it legally, leave it alone.

this guy isn't in a grocery store or Mcdonalds and going to walk out surprised when the car is ripped up, he's left it there for months.... Consider his parts an idiot tax.

lol that's right, me walking out and finding no rims or stereo in my car, is completely different. i did take a look at the car, but haven't touched it. the pavement surrounding the car is covered with years worth of nasty wet leaves compacted into a black slop. the pavement has probably sunk a couple inches from the car sitting there for so long. all the glass is so dirty you can't even see through it, and the hood is all mangled. it's obvious that the car has been sitting there for a long time, and whoever is the owner doesn't care for the car. i'm going to go talk to the owner of the dry cleaners where the car is. i'll see if he knows who's car it is, if he's ever talked to the police about it, etc.

No need to talk to the DMV/DOT to find out who previously owned it... just carefully jimmy the door, and look in the glove compartment: probably has old registration/insurance papers (no doubt expired).
