I understand Chevy didn't put UV protection in the plastic. Can I still have this done?

I had mine done last year. 1 dealer acted like they didn't know what I was talking about, even with the recall number, but the next one said no problem and did it right away, no ?'s asked

Do they replace the entire seatbelt or just the part with the button? Cause mine are lose, and if I could get them replaced for free, that would be nice.
What years were this recall for? because in my 92 the only interior peice thats badly faded is the red seat belt button, no other interior panel or button is faded.
Ted
Alright guys, after doing more internet research and making more than a few dead-end calls here's what I came up with.
This recall affects 1984 through 1990 Camaros, all versions.
Most Chevrolet dealers and the Chevrolet USA Customer Service Center computers only go back 10 years, so this was difficult to find. The service center had to use their "old computer system" and other documents to find the information. I also used the NHTSA website.
My local Chevrolet dealer said they don't do recalls older than 10 years. THAT IS COMPLETE CRAP! Chevrolet REQUIRES them to do recalls for as long as the vehicle exists AND are authorized to work the same recall more than once. My local dealer is about to get a wakeup call.
90-C-22, or 90C22, or 90C22B10 are all TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins), not actual Chevrolet recall numbers. The official Chevrolet recall number is 90043. This comes straight from Chevrolet USA. This recall was issued on 6/1/90. The official NHTSA Campaign ID number is 90V1050000. Approximately 1.5 million vehicles are affected. WOW!
Chevrolet does not send out recall bills. The NHTSA is supposed to. But if you do not supply your change of ownership/address to Chevy if you buy a used car/move if original owner, you'll never recieve the recall.
There's also a recall on seat backs that don't latch, and one on seatbelts that don't retract correctly. They are NHTSA IDs #84V011000 and 85V169000, respectively.
I hope this info will come in handy for a lot of folks out there.
Lata',

maybe i can help also. i work at a chevy dealership (don't tell anybody. ) anyway, the recall is for 84-90 f-body's. if you call with your vin, they will run a check on it for any open recalls. if it says vin not found, then the recall has already been performed. if open, they will replace the red buttons and springs. if you have a seatbuckle that won't latch, then they will replace it. the safety recall never runs out. it will say open recall until the recall is done. best of luck, tom
any gm dealer can do this right? i got a letter fro ma place in canada when i requested some stuff. and they sent a recall letter too. if so im gonna do it sometime soon.
The lady at the Chevrolet Customer Service Center said that the dealers' computer database only goes back 10 years because it's not big enough to hold all the required data for more years than that. She said if the seat belts need to be done, bring it to your dealer and they would fix them, regardless of whether or not the VIN search comes up with anything.
Keep in mind I'm passing on information that I was told. I know there are guys here that work at dealers, and those dealers may or may not have local policies that they follow. But from what I understand, they are SUPPOSED to follow corporate rules.

damn that sucks guys, i miss it by 2 years.... , the red buttons r so faded, they look horrible, you think i should try to talk to the dealer anyway?
Ted
my buttons are in pretty crappy condition also, but I think you should talk to them anyway and see if there was an open recall on your car. It couldn't hurt to try.
yes it is true that the gm data base only goes back 10 years, but if you have an open recall, the info on your vin says open recall until the recall is performed. i promise you that if your vehicle has an open recall, it will show up. if it says vin not found and your veh. is more than 10 years old, there are no open recall and they have been performed. hope this helps. tom
One of you guys that service GM ... I have the parts ... how do you get the the seatbelt open to replace new springs and red button? Is there a special tool required? I have tried but scared of breaking the plastic casing.
thanks in advance.
cdn_87iroc, yes there are 2 special tools you need. the first tool is to remove the red pushbutton. the second tool is to insert the new spring that goes below the new red pushbutton. call your local dealer, maybe they won't charge you too much. best of luck, tom
There is also a recall that includes 83 camaros where the retractor dosent retract. mine gets loose after 5 mins of driving. tug on it and it tighents up only to get loose again 5 mins later. Anyone had any luck getting this taken care of? I went to the dealer today and seems like its going to be a hassle, they couldnt even find the recall and I called GM and they couldnt find it for my car either. anyone else who has this problem and has/hasnt gotten it taken care of please advise. its either that or the new retractors are about $117 per side.
