Typical brake pedal travel?

I'm trying to get my brakes up to par on my 91 Formula.

Last time I had to hammer on the brakes it was for a deer in the middle of the road, I hit them has hard as I could and the wheels didn't lock up.

As far as I know, the pads are still in good shape...I'll have a closer look tomorrow. I just flushed the whole system, the old fluid was pure black. Everything looks alot clearer now, but I'm not convinced the brakes are much better. The main problem seems to be alot of useless travel at the beginning of the stroke, and then at the end it grabs and will eventually lock the wheels.

I'm not sure if this is a typical third gen thing, because this is the only one I have ever driven. Is there a lot of brake travel? Any ideas on where to go from here, assuming the pads are in decent shape?

Thanks for any help!

Re: Typical brake pedal travel?

Yeah, my pedal travels almost to the floor before I get anything out of the brakes. I replaced my master cylinder and it's still the same. I've driven some older G-bodies as well (el camino and monte carlo) and the pedal travel was almost identical. I think it's just the design.

Re: Typical brake pedal travel?

Thanks guys,

I had a feeling it was mostly a design thing.

Re: Typical brake pedal travel?

I'd bet LS1 rotors, pads, and calipers would solve the issue. I put those on my car that I run a manual master cylinder on and it made a hell of a difference.

Re: Typical brake pedal travel?

I think if the booster goes, the pedal gets harder to push. My pedal is real easy to push, but again, the travel is fairly low. I think its in the design.

Travel on mine is like that too..It sucks..I even put Earls lines on it, green stuff pads up front, disc in the rear, and it still does not stop good.....
