Are all Wilwoods good?

Hello I'm kind of new to my Camaro but I need to change the rotors because they're warped. And while I'm at it I'm going to go for performance ones. I was looking it up and I'm pretty sure that these brake kits are pretty good

http://www.wilwood.com/BrakeKitListF...maro&year=1985

But I was wondering what you guys think about them? And will I notice a lot of difference from my stock brakes? Also, if I only change the front brakes and rotors for now, and change the rear brakes and rotors later, is that okay? Or should I change them the same time?

Re: Are all Wilwoods good?

wilwood makes very good brakes, for many different applications. The ones you listed have very thin rotors and are for drag racing, not for street use at all. The thin rotors will not last long on a street car.

You might consider simply swapping in new OE-type rotors, some Hawks pads, and braided lines. Those alone might surprise you. You can do the fronts now, the rears later without difficulty.

Well I was looking at the brake kits again, and IDK which one to go for. What do you guys think is a good brake kit for around $1500 front and rear? I need it for street use but I don't really know much about what to look for in brakes

Re: Are all Wilwoods good?

I installed a kit on the front from Baer several years ago (early '03 IIRC) and I couldn't be happier. I love them. They come mounted on the spindels with braided lines and caliper already mounted which makes the swap an easy one. Literally, all you have to do is separate the stock spindel from the ball joint, tie rod, and strut and install the new one. The rotors are 1.1" thick so it would take a beast of a car to warp them.

I heard baer was good but really expensive. But like I said, IDK much about brakes so I don't really know what's a good deal. Could you tell me what baer brakes you gave specifically?

Re: Are all Wilwoods good?

Good luck, my brackets don't fit and after paying good money I got a reply to file them to fit and now no replies. That is after requesting the parts December last year and getting them September this year. I have been patient, paid immediately when he had the stuff ready, I didn't pay for file to fit junk and now I'm stuck with crap that doesn't fit. I ordered hubs, front brackets and rear brackets from him. After all the time I already had a set of rotors to turn down into hubs, I had the drawing to have the brackets cut but since I'm a man of my word and I requested the parts I held my end of the deal and bought all of them.

I still have the 1LE rotors that i'll probably put on the 88 but the brackets are useless and as such I bought some baer brackets instead. I'm severely dissatisfied.

Haven't done the rears yet but sure as hell hope they do fit.

Yet another expensive lesson learned. DIY, don't trust on anyone else to do it. I've had custom brackets cut for many other brake installs but figured why invent the wheel twice....should have done what I did for my wilwoods, have the guy across the street cut them....they do fit!

Oh wow that's intense lol. Well I looked at the ones on the site but yeah like I said I really don't know what to look for and what's worth what. So.... yeah I just want some decent brakes that will stop my car better but that I can use at high speeds too without worrying that they'll get too hot

Re: Are all Wilwoods good?

Oh i forgot to mention. I was looking at the spohn website and from the little knowledge I have about brakes think they're 1le brakes are good. But I want a slotted and drilled rotor. So can I just buy the caliper and put it with another rotor? Or will that not work?

As long as the rotor is designed for the 1LE set-up, there'll be no problem. I've converted to the four-wheel 1LE system; both fronts and rears are detailed in the following link, should you desire more info:

Yes, Baer brakes are a tad on the pricey side. But, to me they are well worth it. You wouldn't think twice about spending that much money to make your car faster. Regardless of how much horsepower you have, sooner or later you're going to have to stop.

Like I said in my previous post, when you buy the Baer kit, it comes with everything. By everything, I mean:

Spindle
Rotor (already mounted on the spindle)
Bearings (already mounted on the spindle with bearings/grease)
Caliper (already mounted on the spindle)
Brake pads
Braided line

You can order the rotors plain, slotted, cross-drilled, or slotted & drilled. It is a fairly easy swap. Go bed the rotors/pads in, and then have fun making people kiss your dash when you slam the brakes on.

Re: Are all Wilwoods good?

Yeah they seem pretty good. I just wanted to say are like 4 pistons not needed? I can't decide between 2 and 4 pistons. Obviously 4 piston brakes have more breaking power but do I really need that? I just want to improve braking but I don't need anything extreme

On a DD, even if you drive with spirit from time to time, doubtful. Alum dual piston calipers and larger rotors, for example, were used on GM race Camaro, the 1LE.

The two pistons are more than enough for most of our cars. Especially on a DD. Let us know how your upgrade goes.

Re: Are all Wilwoods good?

4 pistons don't necessarily have more power than 2 pistons. It's all about piston area but a fixed caliper with 4 pistons has 1/2 the travel per piston than a comparable floating caliper with 2 pistons of the same size. Because the caliper floats the floating arrangement pistons make double the stroke and as such can be seen as a virtual 4 piston with a similar clamping force. Of course caliper rigidity and so on comes into play but with everything from MC size, pedal ratio, pedal pressure, line pressure, rotor size the same (pad size does not have an influence here, a larger pad has a larger heat transferring surface and as such is less prone to fading) the 2 piston floating caliper should not have to perform less than a 4 piston fixed unit.

Don't want to confuss you, but take a look at Aerospace brakes, they make street brakes as well as racing brakes, kits come complete with hub, rotor, 4 piston calipers and bearing, seals, pads and brackets for around 750.00 complete. You can get rotors drilled and slotted if you wish.
I have them on the front of my Camaro and Wildwoods on the back
