Selling 1989 IROC-Z Oklahoma - end of an era

Well, many of you may recognize me from long ago. I have been a member of this site since it was being hosted at the university web server back in about '97. Time marches on, life changes. I no longer have the time to devote to my car, in fact it has been sitting in the garage gathering dust for the past three years. This is not the way for a Camaro to live. It's time to sell it to someone who can treat it right.

1989 IROC-Z Camaro

Basics
Blue IROC-Z with T-tops, automatic transmission. I have owned this vehicle since November 1991. Outer body paint job suffers from the “California syndrome” common to GM cars built during the mid to late ‘80s. The transition to water-based paint during that time had resulted in a lot of cars on the road with paint peeling off in sheets. There are several areas now that sorely need new paint, but it is all from poor OEM painting techniques and not from any body damage. I was tempted to take the car into some cheap body shop to get new paint shot on it for a few hundred bucks. This would make the car look better for sale purposes, but a poor quality paint job would end up peeling and fading fast very soon after. I respect this vehicle too much to apply a crappy paint job to it, so I decided to leave the exterior alone and let the new buyer fix that part to his hearts content by putting a good quality paint job on it.

Modifications to vehicle include:

Engine
·350 V8 bored over .030
·Forged flattop pistons
·Comp Cams 260HR roller camshaft
·Jacobs Pro-Street ignition system
·Accel Shorty U-groove spark plugs
·Accel 300+ Spark Plug Wires

Cam specs are .500 lift, 206 deg duration @ .050 in. The current 305 ci heads have small flow passages and small valves as well as 58 cc combustion chambers, which makes for high compression. This engine will perform much better with a camshaft with more duration and heads with larger flow passages and slightly larger chambers.

Intake
·Tuned Port Intake System
·SLP Semi-siamesed Intake Runners
·Throttle Body bored out to 52 mm
·TPS airfoil
·24 lb matched and balanced injectors
·Crane adjustable fuel pressure regulator

Exhaust
·Edelbrock TES Headers
·MAC aluminized Cat-back exhaust system w/ dual 4" diameter tips

Transmission and Rear End
·Jasper TH700R4 high performance automatic transmission
·B&M Megashifter
·Richmond 3.73 ratio rear differential
·Energy Suspension polyurethane transmission mount
·Heavy duty aluminum differential stud girdle (cover)
·Heavy duty torque arm (Spohn brand)

Suspension / frame
·Edelbrock Strut Tower Brace
·BBK Control Arms
·Lakewood adjustable panhard rod
·Bilstein shocks
·Sub-frame connectors (welded)

Cooling
·Manual override control of cooling fans
·K&N air filters in gutted air box
·160 degree high flow thermostat
·High performance water pump (Stewart, stage 2)

Other…
·Stainless steel brake lines

Parts not installed yet
·Edelbrock lower intake manifold (higher flow)
·SLP stainless steel 1-3/4 headers, ceramic coated
·Higher performance split-duration camshaft (It's Guido's old cam! I never put it on the car! I'm so damn lazy!)

These parts were purchased with the eye towards creating a new combination of parts that will improve the overall performance of the engine. As any proper engine works best when the all of the parts are designed to work well in concert with each other, these items shown here, if installed on the car today, will not yet provide optimum performance. The final missing key element would be a set of better flowing heads. I also have various items purchased with the goal of burning a new PROM: moates tool, PROMs, burner, eraser, etc... all unused, all will go with car as well.

Asking price... I am unsure of the value of this car, but I am going to start with $4500.

Re: Selling 1989 IROC-Z Oklahoma - end of an era

Here is a little more information to answer some of the questions that have been posed. The block is a standard 2-bolt main 350 v8, bored over .030 inches. The engine and transmission were swapped out about 40,000 miles ago. There are some parts on the car that have 135,000 miles on them, the odometer is one of these. The car has stock brakes for this style, which means disks in front and drums in rear. The alternator is black powdercoated. I've only had the car on the market about two days so far, so the $4500 asking price is firm for now. I've seen plenty of ragged out Camaros going for $3000, so I don't think $4500 is unreasonable at all for this type of car in this condition.

Re: Selling 1989 IROC-Z Oklahoma - end of an era

well, if you ever think it can go for 3500 you have a buyer. with 40k on engine i might try to come up with 4000. PM me if the price goes down to 4000 or below.
EDIT: btw, did the car get any damage in recent storm? there was tornado warnings and flood warnings. Just wondering cause we had a roof of one building ripped off over here.

Re: Selling 1989 IROC-Z Oklahoma - end of an era

Thanks for the compliment. Yeah, I spent many hours on engine beautification. The upper plenum is polished along the top ribs, I replaced the little distributor cover in the back with an aluminum one from a Corvette (Camaro's came with a plastic one), high temp black paint for the intake system, black powdercoated alternator. Removed the AIR system.

Yes, I still have the car as of today (Friday), but I also have the car listed locally and got a couple of phone calls from interested buyers who may be coming out to look tomorrow.

Re: Selling 1989 IROC-Z Oklahoma - end of an era

This car is SOLD.

Yep, I finally sold the IROC. Sold it to a local guy who wanted a good hot car, interested in doing more modifications. Perfect fit for this car. I was crying and bawlin' after he drove away with my baby. I had that car for over 15 years, and it was like watching someone else take away your girlfriend or something. I expect he'll treat it right. He better.

I was looking through all of my old receipts and such this morning before he came by to look at the car, and it brought back all sorts of happy memories for me. Not just of the car, but the people that the car brought me in touch with over the years. People like Guido and Kenwood, Snakeskinner, all of the people that I met back at the first national thirdgen gathering back in Oklahoma in '99. Then of course there are all the people that I never met except in cyberspace, like Dirk, Trax, Pablo, Vader, and countless others. All sorts of cool folks I met down in Texas for various regional gatherings. The entire ICON Motorsports gang. Great people, great friends. My girlfriend could never quite understand why I spent so much effort on this car hobby, but she could never see that it wasn't just the car. It's more like a whole lifestyle.

Ah, i kinda see how you feel about letting the car go.

Ive been pondering the idea of selling my iroc to pick up an LS1 camaro.

Though, ive been having the issue of knowing ill be crying like a 2 year old kid who just had his sucker taken away.

Seems to be sentimental value is the hardest part of letting the car go.
