Back in 1989 to order a Camaro 1LE you had to have SCCA license. Some people got lucky and new people at GM and ordered a couple.GM DID NOT want the public to own these cars.I ordered one in 92 and was declined by the central office once before they accepted it.
I would say about aprox 95% of the 89 1LE camaros were raced.Do not forget many went to Canada for the SCCA series. Many were run hard and also wrecked.I have done research on these cars and talked with many collectors.I have found out three units to be totaled.I only know of three maybe four units that were not raced and are in collections.
Just in the past six months I have come across two more 1989 1LEs.One had 150K on the odometer, missing many parts & did not run.The other was a canadian car painted different color, had t-tops installed & needed engine work as well.As you can see, finding a low mileage original 89 1LE is becoming very difficult.
I have found aprox 20 of the 1989 1LEs. The U.S. series.
This is why I wrote "APROX" that means close not an exact figure.
You will not find a 1989 camaro 1LE in this shape with this many miles for this price.I have looked. If ANYONE finds one let me know!

I can appreciate a car in great condition and low mileage. I own one. Your approximation is IMO a bit boastful. To say 1 of 111 made is true, but of approximately 34 left is not. Unless you know exactly what has happened to the other 110 cars, you're just picking numbers out of the air and that's really stretching the facts. Your own figures put you at best, 1 of 81 known still to exist (3+4+2+20). I am not knocking the fact that this is a rare car and I wish you well on selling a piece of chevy history.
I am not trying to be boastful. Out of 111 891LEs minus 76 Canadian 89 1LEs equals 35 U.S. Units. With APROX three totaled. there might be 32,33,34 left.
I have no idea if these wrecked 1LEs were crushed or restored. I would need ever single 89 camaro 1le vin to give an exact figure.
I really appreciate these cars and I try to preserve our history and educate others in the process.
Could you send me your vin# from your 1989 1LE? It would be great help!
Thank you for your interest.
Do we all agree 111 1LE Camaro's were built in 1989?
Of that Number: 74 of the 1LE cars also had RPO code R7U for the Players Challenge Series.
2 1LE cars (Non R7U) were imported to canada.
That leaves: 35 cars built as US spec 1LE's.
From what I understand all 74 of the R7U cars were loaded with power windows, locks, rear defrost, etc. The 35 US spec cars and the 2 Canadian 1LE's were virtually strippers.
I've heard there are several cars that were wrecked and totaled but I know of no one who has an approximate total.
EZ Ladies
Lets all not forget we love these cars
If you are a true collector desire is b4 #s
Landis knows what he is saying here
He may not be exactl on the #s but guess what they are still LOW no matter what. nothing wrong with pointing out the +s when selling a car. If times were better I would buy it and Landis you know that I would.
Hey there firehawk I know where you can find the 92 Purple haze 1Le you want so bad....... you just gotta wanna come up off the coin for it........ha ha
You want to trade for a 90 iroc vert with 27k orignal miles all orignal paint and the works. red/with black interior. it would have to be an even trade.
You have pic's of this 1LE?
Possible trade for a tastefully built 4th gen? FWIW, i am an old guy, not a young kid that has abused the car. Here are a few pic's...
Just reduced to $14,500. I will keep goodyear gaterbacks, older style IROC wheels, new oem stripes & new oem silver center caps. This offer is good untill NOV15th 2008.

Hello from Indy. Just ran across this thread. Good to see so much interest in your '89 1LE. I was PR director at Chevy in '89. Three of the 111 built (not the first three, but close) started life in the PR press fleet. A red one went to our office in California. A white one stayed in Detroit. A blue one went to New York, where a great guy named Jim Rooney baby-sat its exposure to the east coast media. John Heinricy personally signed off on these cars after setting them up for optimum performance at the proving grounds. I happen to own the blue car. It came out of the fleet with a little over 7500 miles on it. Now, it's got less than 10k. I've replaced the battery. That's all. I'm aware of one other very original 1LE that's in a collection. There are surely more, but no question these cars were carefully funneled to racers, so they were beat up pretty quickly. I suspect there are more '90s and '91s left because they weren't restricted like the '89s.
Who knows if there's an up-to-date 1LE registry?
Just had it appraised for $18,000. About impossible to find another to replace it with.I am just out of room at the moment and have a lead on a 88 1LE.
If there are no serious offers I will do some more detail work and have it reappraised next spring. If anyone needs pictures just PM.I will try to respond ASAP, Thanks.
