Anyone interested? A co-worker of mine is selling a 1991 Camaro Rally Sport. I am planning on buying the car to resell it. Not planning on making a bunch of money, just moving the car from her to a new owner, and picking up a couple of hundred to cover my time and trouble.
The car is black and has a t-tops. It has the glass tops. It is a v-6 auto, with factory air, PS, and PB. The body is pretty straight, and does not appear to have had any serious damage. There is no visable rust. The wheels are aftermarket. The rest of the car is stock. The front seat covers are worn out, the carpet is worn out, and the dash pad is cracked. The rest of the interior is decent. The doors open and close nice and straight. The t-top is leaking, and the carpet is wet in the drivers side. I have not pulled back the carpet to see if there is rust under there. The car was last driven in December 08 when the altenator failed, and the car has not been on the road since. It has the aero package, and all the parts look good. The title is clean.
The car looks too nice to part out, but it will take a lot of work to make a real sharp one out of it. I have no interest in it, as I have my bird, and am a Poncho guy from way back. I also have five other vehicles, and do not need it.
If this sounds like something you might be interested in, let me know, and I will provide more information. I am also looking for suggestions about the value of this car.
We are located in the Western North Carolina mountains just outside of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 80 miles west from Asheville, NC., 125 miles north of Atlanta, and 85 miles east from Knoxville, Tenn.
No problem. I was just trying to help a co-worker sell her car, and thought that someone on the site might want it. Neither of us has any idea what the thing is worth, so we were looking for suggestions. I believe that it will sell fast locally anyway.
OK, here's the deal. She wants $500.00 for the car as is. The price is firm. If anyone is interested, sent me your contact information, and I will get you in touch with her. The car is located on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina. Any deal you make is with the owner, and I am not involved with the deal or the car in any way other then helping her to advertize it. I have not checked the car out other then a quick walk around, so I do not know if it is a POS or not. You will probably have to tow or trailer the car home, as the altenator is bad, battery is dead, and Lord knows what else is wrong with it. Maybe nothing? Maybe everything?
The owner knows nothing about cars, and can not provide any information, other that it is broke and does not run any more.
If I had unlimited time and money, I would love the build a street rod out of it. Drop in a 350 crate engine, fresh 700R4, custom paint, interior work, cool sound system, and what ever mechinical work it needs, then have fun!
She will be working tomarrow. I will call her in the AM and get you a number. I doubt if she will be able do any pic's. If you want it and you live close, your best bet is to drive over and check it out.
Ok, here is the information. The owner's name is Linda Owle. Her cell number is 828-736-1790. She is working today, so if you call goes to her voice mail, leave a message and she will call you back. I was able to find out some more information about the car. She bought it in 2005 for the price of 6K. It has 170K miles on it. They had the tie-rod ends replaced because they were loose. She had some various small repairs done to the car over the years, but nothing major. She says that the running gear is good. She does not know if the A/C works, because they never used it. She believes that it has the original paint. The car looks decent as a whole, but does have some small dents and scratches. The body parts, hood, doors, and deck lid all fit well. The tires look iffy. She did not know that the T-tops are leaking until I told her. The car is her baby, she cannot afford the fix it up, and hopes that it gets a good home where it can live on as a cool street rod. I believe that the car is an excellent deal for the $500.00 price that she has on it, as it certainly has potential.
See if you can get some pictures, even some crappy ones to apease my intrest a little.
I'm not overly far away, but far enough l dont want to drive down there for a pile of junk.
It's still available. I am surprized that no one has looked at it, as it looks better then many I have seen on the road. If its to much trouble to upgrade it to a V-8, it will make a great parts car, as the body is complete and in decent condition.
Honestly, I have never heard it running. It belongs to a co-worker who says that it was running well in December, then the altenator stopped working, and they parked the car. Everything under the hood looks clean and complete, but I can't say that the car will make it all the way to Michigan. Maybe we can jump start it, and see what how it runs. And maybe we can get a few more pictures. I'll look at my work schedule for next week.
yea if you can see if it runs good and drive it a bit and give me an honest answer on how well you think the car will hold up then I can drive down there with a friend and drop in a new alternator and battery and drive it away.
__________________ I enjoy a nice body, no matter the make or model.
Linda, the owner is going to get some more pic's to post. I have to work all weekend, and get off on Wednesday AM. I will go by her house, get it started, check it out, and let you know what I find.
A local wrecking yard offered Linda $500.00 cash for the car. She does not want to see it parted out, so she refused the offer. She prefers that somebody enjoy the car as a driver.
Not to sound like a smart a**, but cash talks, BS walks. The first person who waves $500.00 cash at Linda will own the car. I understand why people are relunctant to drive a distance to look at the car, that's why we are going to try and get a better assessment of its condition and post it. Linda cannot offer any sort of warrenty, and I don't have a crystal ball. I will check the car out and give you all as honest of an opinion as I can, then if someone wants to take a chance, it is up to them. I will point out every little thing wrong.
A few years back I bought an 88 Chevy Silverado, one ton, crewcab, 4x4, dually truck through the Auto Trader. I lived in Georgia, and the truck was in Denver, CO. The dealer took a deposit to hold the truck until my arrival, but agreed to refund the deposit, once I got there if I did not like the truck. I bought a round trip flight, because it was cheaper then a one way ticket, and it would have cost double to try and book a flight home if I decided not to buy the vehicle. I also had a tenative plan in place that if I bought the truck, got half way home, and had a serious mechinical issue, I could have it towed to any major city, loaded onto a auto transport and delivered to Georgia. The salesman met me at the Denver airport with the truck. I drove it the 20 or so miles back to Fort Lupton, CO, and decided that it was indeed better then it had been described. We completed the deal, I took the truck to a Grease Monkey in Denver, had the fluids changed, a new fan belt, everything checked from front to back. It was cheap insurance. Cost about $150.00. The next day I drove the truck 875 miles to St Louis, MO. The second day I drove the rest of the way to Valdosta, GA. It was a great ride, riding high with the A/C frosting, the stereo blasting, and the cruise contol on. That 454 EFI would pass everything but a gas station. It required one quart of oil in Atlanta. The moral of the story is that, I was very lucky that it did not have some serious hidden problem and break down out in Kansas! If you have ever been across Kansas, you know what I am taliking about. And second, I had a contigent plan if the whole thing turned into poop 1650 miles from home.
The old fart will now step down off of the soap box.
my buddy from work says he will take it im givin him the number if he is serious about it i will mostlikely drive down to get it with him, im trading him hoods if he does end up with it. hes got money just need some more info on the camaro
Sorry for the delay. I have been working 12 hour nights at the hospital all weekend, Monday, and Tuesday. I will complete this work track on Wednesday morning. By the time I drive home, hug the wife, dump the cat litter box, and feed the dogs, its time to go to bed, get up and do it all over again. On Wednesday morning, I will go by and check out the Camaro. I will take a battery, some gas, some ramps, tools, and a camera. Unless it's pooring rain, I should have pictures and information posted for everyone's review by Wednesday evening. There is one local person also looking at the car now. She does not have the money available right now, and is waiting for my assessment before she makes a decision, so everyone should have a pretty equal chance of getting it if you want it.Linda, the owner is very honest, and does not want any bad feelings over the car, so she is completely in favor of an inpartial assessment. Charles
thank you for the update so far 86WS6, looks like some good intrest is coming about, knuckles_up, im not trying to steal this car from under you, but my buddy from work needs a car and $500 is a damn good deal if it only needs an alternator to get it running, plus i really want that hood
I have everything together loaded in my truck, tools, a battery, gas, jumper cables, drop light, ramps and a digital camera to check out the car in the AM. I get off from work at 8:00 AM, and providing it is not pooring rain in the AM, I should get some information and pictures posted by Wednesday afternoon. Maybe we can finally get this thing going so someone will own and enjoy this old 91 RS.
I have 22 pictures. The max allowed on this tread is three. Anyone interested in more pictures, send me an email, and I will forward them to you. Details of the car will follow in the next tread. Thanks to everyone for your interest and patience. Charles
The car runs good. It started right up and drove nice and straight. I had it running for over an hour without any problems. It is not a perfect car, and I will be glad to detail everything that I found. Charles gcsprayjr@msn.com
Below are some observations of problems that I found with the car.
1) Windshield is cracked
2) Rear bumper support bracket has significant rust.
3) Car is dirty, and full of leaves, debris
4) A/C system is low on freon
5) Transmission fluid is brown
6) Water leak from T-top of side window on Driver's side.
7) Dash pad is cracked
8) Front seat bottom has large hole in it
9) Rain drip rails on t-top glass, where they overlap the door glass are bad on both sides.
10) Car does not have stock hood. The hood has a tag on it listing the engine as a 305 V-8, and the car has its original V-6
11) Car has 186 K miles
12) The tilt wheel lock is worn out, as the tilt wheel will move without releasing the latch.
13) Very slight engine miss at idle, proabably a vacuum leak in the dash board.
14) A/C, heat, and vent all blow out of the heater vents. Probably that vacuum leak.
15) Wiper strip seals on door glass is worn out, both sides.
16) Paint peeling from front bumper
The battery is bad
The charging system is not working as designed, although the altenator appears to be charging a little, it is not working well enough to maintain the battery under normal use
The engine is quiet and responsive, smoked a little on start-up, but quickly cleared up. Car will doo a great one wheel peel, and will bark tires shifting into second. No oil leaks noted. Appears to be stock, with all hoses, emissions and related parts as were installed at the factory.
Transmission shifts great. Transmission is tight and quiet. No leaks noted.
Brakes work well. Peddle is up and brakes are responsive
Front end is tight. No play detected in steering wheel.
No rust found except the rear bumper support bracket which is rusted badly.
THE CAR IS STILL FOR SALE. The party that stated that the car was sold, was supposed to pick up the car on Saturday. He was a no show. Linda has attempted to contact him by phone, and he has not returned her calls. I have sent hime three E-mails, and have not received a response.
So the car is available. Anyone interested can look at the pictures and the discription of the car in the previous treads. I do have a some more pictures, that I can E-mail to anyone who wants them.
My assessment of the car is a very critical one. I will rather someone, look at the discription and then be feel that the car presents itself better in person, then discribed, than for someone to feel like they have wasted their time.
The body of the car is solid, except for the one piece of sheet metal that supports the rear bumper, That part has some rust on it, but is not falling apart. If someone were to treat the piece with a rust inhibitor and paint it, it will last a long time. The biggest problem with the car as far as it being road worthy, is the charging problem, and the cracked windshield. The charging problem may be as simple as replacing the dead battery, and there may actually be a problem with the altenator. I do not own a load tester, and could not put a load on the altenator to be sure if it is producing the proper amperage to maintain the system. With a good cleaning the car will present as a decent car. The carpet and the rest of the interior with the exception of the drivers seat and the dash pad is in good condition, and will clean up well. All of the dash gauges are working, and the running gear is sound. The wheels are a matched set of 14 inch American alloy rims, and are in good condition. The tires have 80% tread on the rears, and 60% of the tread on the fronts. I ran the car continuously for over an hour with no issues noted. I stopped the engine and restarted it a total of five starts with no problems. The car had not been started since December, and started up on the second revolution. There was a small puff of smoke on the initial start up, which cleared quickly, and I never seen any more smoke. With a little elbow grease, this could be a nice first car for someone, or it could be built into a cool street rod.
It's still available. If I had a way to haul the Camaro to Atlanta I would take it the fbodygathering next week. My Pace American car hauler will only haul one car at a time, and the bird is going for sure. Someone down there would probably buy the Camaro and take it home with them.
