1989 Z28

Hello,
I have a 1989 Z28 for sale (has the Z28 emblems not IROC-Z or RS)

It has about 187,000 miles and it's the 305 TBI, with auto transmission (supposedly there's a shift kit in the tranny). It runs but needs work (obvious reason for selling).

The guy I bought it from had it repainted (not sure what the original color was). I think I am like the 4th or 5th owner. I am trying to sell it because I don't know how to work on cars and this thing is drilling a whole in my pocket to keep it running.

Problems I know of: Steering pulls to the right, sometimes the car will cut off while I am at a stop light/sign (and the service engine light will come on briefly after the car shuts off), needs rear end bearings, and the tranny has a leak. Any more questions, just ask.

I'm asking $2,000 obo

Re: 1989 Z28

Yeah I am sure about the year. I ran the vin# and it came back as a Camaro IROC-Z28/RS on the DMV's website and the title also says it's a 1989.

Sorry I was in a rush yesterday and I forgot to mention that the transmission mount is cracked too. The car will come with a "bonus" if my asking price is met.

Re: 1989 Z28

Okay.. so DMV is screwed then. Maybe an RS.. definitely not a z28.. again.. the Z28 nameplate went by the wayside and IROC-Z was the model in 88-90.

Re: 1989 Z28

That's strange because my car doesn't have any RS emblems, none what so ever. The tail lights are not RS lights and it also has the hood louvers. RS's didn't come with grided tail lights in 89 and RS's didn't have the hood louvers.

Oh yeah I can be reached by email at: djsmith77@yahoo.com

Like posted above no 89 camaro's were produced with the Z28 badging...only IROC-Z's check out the tech data for 89 here https://www.thirdgen.org/1989-chevy-camaro.

Is there a Z28 or IROC-Z badge on the passenger side dash?
It looks like you more than likely have an RS that has been debadged with grid tail lights and a louvered hood added by a PO. Your car still has the 15" RS wheels on it as well. Changing the taillights and hood are pretty easy and the parts are pretty plentiful. I also have an 89 RS and have a set of grid taillights on it because I liked the look better, but that doesn't make it a Z28.

Honestly with the work that needs to be done to the car and it only being a run of the mill RS your $2000 price is a bit high IMHO, that is unless "the bonus" is a TPI motor that you're going to throw in. Sorry if it seems like I'm being an a-hole, just trying to let you know what you really have and what you should expect.

The tires are 15 inch tires which were "standard" on IROC's just like the TBI fuel injected engine. The tires or rims also say "IROC-Z" not RS. The passenger side dash says "Z28" but it doesn't say IROC-Z under the Z28. I guess it could have been rebadged but how would the badges fit? RS and Z28 are different sized and the badges fit perfect. I've checked the IROC-Z spotter's guide and everything matches to a "base" IROC. My asking price of $2000 is not high considering the amount of money I've spent on repairs and the "bonus". I spent $700 on getting a new gas tank installed November/December because it failed the "test" only smog. The emissions were fine, it failed the "Evap" part of the test. It passed after I got the gas tank installed.

I've had other work done to the car as well within the past few years. I've had the exhaust leak fixed (over $400), intake manifold gasket fixed (over $400), new distributor (over $400) plus the ($700) I spent so it could pass smog. That's about $2000 right there! I have receipts for to prove how much I've spent keeping this car running.

I'm taking a loss I just want the money back that I spent on this car. I paid $2300 for it so you do the math. And the $2000 is the "asking" price (which means it's open for negotiating), and it's only firm if whoever is interested wants the "bonus". I don't think you're being an a--hole, you're entitled to your opinion.

In 89 the base 15 inch IROC wheel was restyled to have the appearance of the optional 16 inch wheel. The wheels that are on your car are the RS wheels and are not the base IROC wheel. It would be fairly easy to rebadge the car from an RS to something else. Chevy used the same ground effects and bumper covers on all the camaro's so they made the RS, IROC-Z and Z28 badges all the same size and with the same mounting pin configuration to all fit in the same location. It's just a matter of removing the old and attaching the new. You can check out the emblems on Hawks site http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/emblems.aspx

You could probably take the VIN to the local Chevy dealer and have them look up the to verify if it's an IROC or an RS. Just a thought.

Good look on the sale.

Price drop to $1700 for those who are interested.... the "bonus" will come with it too. Check it out before it goes... hurry up, hurry up, hurry up before it's too late.
