My '85 IROC Race Car - Camaros - Third Generation F-Body Message Boards

Here's my '85 IROC that I started tearing down last summer. I finally have gotten to start putting things back together! Since the car is in my side yard, the suspension is going in first.

Here is a list of what's going under the car:

Suspension:
Eibach Sportline springs (funny story behind those)
KYB AGX shocks and struts
BMR adj. panhard bar
BMR adj. LCAs
(following is from Spohn)
-'97 T-56 retrofit crossmember and torque arm
-solid chrome moly front and rear sway bars and rear sway bar mounting kit
- LCA relocation brackets
-all new hardened bolts for all the suspension
Brakes:
2004 Corvette calipers and performance rotors
front and rear C5 brake brackets (many thanks to Ed Miller!)
Custom front hubs modified for floating rotors
2" spacers front and rear
Wheels:
2001 Camaro SS rims

Here are some pics of my Spohn fabricated upper strut mount (I forgot to mention it in the list), the bump steer kit and front a arm, and the weld in LCA relocation brackets

I picked up a '97 LT1 and T-56 from a guy whos gf wrapped his Z28 around a tree for $1800. Everything minus the bellhousing

Time for the funny story. Because the car is currently just the unibody it weighs next to nothing. Now, in order to install the new springs (which are about 800 pound springs) I needed to weigh down the so i could compress the springs far enough to bolt in the drivers side front suspension assembly. So what did I use to weigh the car down? (and no...I'm NOT a *******) about a thousand pounds of concrete bags! It was quite the sight! But hey, thats what doing it all yourself (with the great help of my dad) is all about.

Here's a pic of my dad's beautiful '87 IROC (foreground) next to my '85 IROC a few years ago. Sadly someone jumped a curb with it, busted two rims and the front bumper and spoiler and then about a month ago someone side swiped it right behind the left rear wheel right in front of my house!

but i still love that car.

That is/was an absolutley beautiful car i would kill for a black or blue 87-88 iroc

yeah I love the car. The first two pics are what it looked like when we got it back. and the last one is what it looks like now. its going to cost $1600 just for the front to be replaced and painted. thankfully there was no mechanical damage to the car, actually the gas tank cracked but thats what welding is for. lol

Does anyone by chance have a front bumper and/or ground fx for sale? the front bumper is 500 bucks alone

couple of updates on the twins lol; first on my dads '87, i found a guy that will repair the whole front end, repaint the chips on the hood, and fix the swipe behind the rear wheel all for $1300! and at first i thought this guy wasnt for real, but it turns out hes done many show cars for hot august nights and stuff. and he can patch up the bumper/gfx so i dont have to buy new ones!

now for the race car! saturday night my dad and i put in the right side of the front suspension and brakes. last night i put the rear spohn sway bar onto the axle. today i crawled under the front and installed the front spohn sway bar

tonight after my dad gets home we are going to install the rear axle and then i get to roll it back into the garage

so tomorrow i should have pictures of the rear suspension install and hopefully have the car back in the garage by wednesday

Its looking good man. I wish I started out with an iroc-z project to begin with Besides my Rs but its good. looks like your coming along damn good. Good luck with it man.

thanks bro. what does your '86 look like?
monday night my dad and i finished the rear suspension at about 10pm and i finally got the car back into the garage last night! my car is finally coming together (after about a year). now its time to finish the brake system and tackle installing forth gen pedals. any advice about how to approach that is much needed and appreciated. and if anyone knows what all i need exactly that would be a great help. so far i have the forth gen pedals and the '97 T56 and thats it. my car was originally an auto.

thats the 86. Its got a 305 tpi/ with a 700r4 with 42k miles on the car.

thats an awesome build ya got going for ya there..cant wait to start tearing mine up and building it up somewhat like youre doing..the only differnce is that I want mine as a dd so 800 lbs rated springs are sorta out the question o and I want to drop in an LS1/T56

Okay update time! a lot has changed for the better and kinda for worse. First off, I sadly decided to stop working on the '85 because i was running into so many costly problems and i didnt really want to still be working on it five years from now! and the fact the only places i could drive it are at least two hours away...so my dad has aloud me to take all the suspension and brake parts and put them on the street car the i drive everyday. the only bad part about this whole thing is no lt1 and t56...for now ;] his big problem is gas milage. so maybe an LS1 or something is in order.

So onto the '87! two weekends ago i had my mechanic deal with the front setup. and that saturday i did the rear myself with the help of my dad. all i can say is it looks a million times better, and it handles like a dream! and with just the front 'vette brakes installed right now, the stopping power is just crazy! so check out the pics! (more on the way)

Near future upgrades will be installing my MOMO Trek steering wheel, a Sparco seat or two, a six point roll bar (from the eight point kit i already bought for the '85 lol), the Spohn torque arm and crossmember (im going to need to have the car in the garage to put that in, instead of the sloped driveway)
