I've always been tempted to not clean and paint anything and build a rusty, nasty, nasty old engine and see how many people still ask how much power it makes.
Well you see the trick with a nice clean engine, is to keep it nice and clean. But with a rusty dirty nasty engine, it's not so hard. but un clean engines are not so attractive to look at anyways.
I don't keep the engine clean so it looks pretty, I keep it clean because nothing is a bigger pain to work on than a grimy engine.
How did I get the Thermoquad clean? I didn't, that's a brand-new unit, never been run before.
There's not that much left to do before it'll fire, but it needs a new exhaust fabricated before it's roadworthy. I'll probably get bored of it in another week or so though and leave it until spring.

Well you're not going to find a new Thermoquad easily. It's been over 20 years since they were last made
so, uhh... you know a guy who knows a guy who has a stash of new ones from circa 1978 sitting in a hermetically sealed bubble in his basement? That where you got the dana 44 too?
that's a staggered carb like a q-jet isn't it? just with a different primary system, like the opposite of the power piston sorta eh?
Interesting, hope it works well.
Hey, Got a 1986 custom not too long ago - 350 stroked to 383 - custom sound - custom interior - hydrolics - ground effects - the car is seen @www.musclecarclub.com
i have to take some pics myself tho for my insurance with ICBC - trying to get it a collector car status for cheaper insurance - anyone had any luck with this some help would be cool - In Prince George, if ya'd like to meet and cruise...
Your car would never make it. It would have to be at least 25 years old, and in very good completely original condition in appearance. It's also not like insuring a vehicle for "pleasure use" either, where you can use it something like 5 days a month to drive to work or school. You wouldn't be able to drive it to work or school at all.
The only other collector plate option would be if it was 15 years old and extreamly low production numbers, but it would still have to be completely Stock all original.

Right, it would have to be 15 years old and there would have to have been less than 1500 of that model made in that year, or it would have to be 15 years old and the maker has been out of business for 5 years.
In addition to all that, you have to own and insure another non-collector vehicle in order to get a premium discount. If it's your only car, you can still get a Collector plate, but you'll pay the full premium.
There are also Modified Collector Vehicles, but they have to be a 1958 or older model.
I welded up my dual exhaust tonight. Here's one side, the other is exactly the same.
Glenn, after I bolt the exhaust up I'll bring it over to your house and tune it up in your driveway. Then when you finally get the Harley the neighbors won't think it's all that loud by comparison.
ahem, well uhhh, I hope that's temporary, holy schnike that'd be loud.
and no, you can't buy mandrel bends at any parts store, trust me, i've looked, lots. Lots of crinkle bends, up to a whopping 2.5" size. Very few 3" of any kind, let alone mandrel bends. One exhaust shop in the south put on my exhaust with a 3" bend, and a 3" straight pipe, but I don't like the way they joined it, so I was going to fix it eventually... But I can't seem to find mandrel bends. (aside from trying to get down there to buy them from him).
no - dont "know" the guy - but i work on the road that accesses the mill (diversified transportation - school bus contractor) and i was behind a G6 the other day - probably him... =)
for insurance, ICBC said they would consider it due to it being completly customized and I now have had it appraised... (yeah i got 2 other daily drivers - so i could give up driving it to work) they've told me to submit my application for review... ICBC puts an exception to their rules at the end "any other vehical that is deemed colloctor car" or something of that nature. Rules are punitive tho - to and from car shows, and for pleasure use only... you're right tho - no drive to work/school or w/e with it. Hell, if you realize you need a bag of milk on your way home, your supposed to go home get your daily driver, and then get the milk. Whatever! lol

Reason: added reply about insurance
ah, well he'll talk to you about your car sooner or later (or try and race you)... He's a buddy of mine from the hometown (Vernon). He used to have an '85 Camaro...
anyway, small world..
I've never seen anything from ICBC that indicated they'd accept anything considered "collectible" that didn't meet the rest of their requirements. All their documentation pretty much forbids modifications of any kind, except for the occasional safety upgrade.
With your appraisal you might be able to get a "stated value" policy though, although they seem to want the car to have collector status first.
At the very least you should probably get an Excess Special Equipment Endorsement to cover the value of your customizations. That would actually increase your premiums, though.
yeah - thats what im not getting. in order to get stated value policy the car has to have collector status... but like i said, the car dont seem to meet their requirements by age only. I mean certainly the car is
"In exceedingly good condition.
Maintained or restored to a condition that ICBC considers to be of collectible value."
It's been featured in a muscle car magazine and the stereo alone has won over 6 awards. (100% Soundstream amp/speakers w/Eclipse head)
I got a phone number if they deny it that i can call and talk to someone... I guess i might have to bring it down south to get it checked out in person if they request it.
"Collector" should be "collector cars" classic cars and antique cars should have their own class i think - this is a pain in the butt =P

That's not the way it works. They have certain criteria an you must meet those to qualify. A MacLaren F1 is a "collectible" from the day it's made...but it probably won't qualify based on the numbers made. My 1991 GTA had just over 2,000 made, so I got to wait the full 25 years. But, a 1992 had less than 500 made and it probably qualifies today.
ICBC has to have certain criteria and based on various consultations, they came up with the criteria. FYI, I do know that they were canvessing the current collectors a while back about allowing "modifieds" to qualify. And, the collectors voted it down. ICBC was going to allowed "modifieds" to qualify after 35 years.
I'm still alive. The camaro is in storage. No real plans for it, other than a good ol polishing. She has finally become my summer toy, and not a daily driver too.
I'm still alive but I'm on the island, no time to work on the car. It's just sitting in the driveway... Hopefully soon if I can get some cash together.
Now that I got all of your attention...anyone interested in trying to get together this spring (regardless of your car)? I re-injured my neck last the fall and it's been a slow recovery because I keep accidentally aggravating the injury again. In fact, I have not been able to work for most of February due to the pain (and the amount of painkillers I need to take to make the pain bearable).
But I wouldn't mind if we could organize a bit of a gathering or something...if only to introduce ourselves to each other. And, don't worry if your F-body isn't running. Just bring yourselves.
I am willing to put on a barbeque at my home in Kamloops if people are interested.
Hey id be game, but the roads have to be nice lol
I sold the daily to pay for the GTA, still havent picked up another one yet...
Other then that Id be game
This late in the year the roads won't be anything to worry about, as long as you're not taking the Phase II (worst highway in all BC). Even still I'm sure one of the gentlemen from the south okanagan could offer you a ride.
I'm just joking. I wear a nuisance mask underneath the welding helmet. Mostly to help keep my breath from fogging up the full-face glass, but it's shocking how grey the mask turns.
Tonight, my car had an engine running in it for the first time in 2 years. I couldn't wait until I was finished with the exhaust before starting it. It was not at all quiet.
Unfortunately it was loud enough to quite literally scare the crap out of the dog. All over the carpet in the basement.
Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I was out-of-town and did not have computer access.
Until this snow AGAIN, I was about clean the grill and get it fired up this weekend. Hopefully we can arrange something in late March/early April, if people are up to it. Basically, I guess Chris, Tony and possibly WhiskyChick (sorry, I don't know your name).
Daishi, you are welcome to come, though I realize it's a hell of a drive for you.
Chris, that looks awesome. I didn't know you knew how to weld. I look forward to hearing your exhaust (though my neighbours may not). What do you plan to use for mufflers?
If you saw it up close you wouldn't accuse me of knowing how to weld. I think it turned out pretty good, considering I'm using a $100 Princess Auto clearance table FCAW welder. I'm hanging a couple of Dynomax 17219's behind the axle on each side below the frame rails. They'll hang kind of low, but I'll paint them black to make them disappear. Hopefully the sound won't be too obnoxiously loud.
