Insurance rates discussion

Hey, I got about 8 different quotes today from different insurance companies. I have an 85 Camaro coupe and I am 19 with a G2 licence (intermediate)

I got a quote for $2900 Canadian (aprox $2500 American). I also got a quote for just under $8000

What is your rate? Include your age, model and year.

Re: Insurance rates discussion

Wow, Canada is really insane on insurance!!!!

I'm 59, '82 Camaro highly modified, engine will be a 383 stroker... I don't use my toys for a daily driver, just for playin' and carry insurance on them thru State Farm, limits me to 3500 miles per year but I never seem to run even half that many miles in the summer.... Rate for the Camaro will be $140/year with the value at $20,000. Age does have some benefits....

I'm 21, and drive an 89 formula. About 60 bucks a month. Radical, how did you find out about the state farm insurance for classics? I currently have them as my regular insurance but can't find anything about classic insurance on their website.

My agent is a long time fishing and hunting buddy, carry all my insurance with him. He's very good at finding me deals and keeping me up on what's available.

Re: Insurance rates discussion

Yes, insurance here in canada is insane. Luckily I found my old neighbours after we moved and my HOUSE insurance was $300 a month, cause we're in the country. The new insurance is $100, more of what I expected after paying $60 in the old house.

Anyway, on topic. Right now, if I had all three on (a 2000 and 2007, and 86 Trans Am) I pay $290 a month, and without the Trans AM I pay $260. I am on the higher side as well, and have looked around and I could get as low as $200 a month for two cars.

Try this site:

www.kanetix.ca/

it's where I found some good deals. They are not brokers, and the top two I had were Desjardins and BelairDirect. Be interesting to see if it's the same for you.

im in southern ontario..39 male, im with state farm ,, i pay as follows per month
2003 gsxr 1000 $89
2001 honda arrod coupe V6 $93
1984 Z28 $63
2007 RMZ 250 $12

i as well have my house with them
but im looking to change the Z28 .. as the last classic car i had with them got stolen out of my driveway , had it for 17 years and had everything you can do to it done.. had a ton of cash in it .. they had rwecord of me taking it off the road every year for 17 years and because i didnt have it appraised i got $3500 for it ..so im thinking of going with silver wheels insurance .. there rates are based on appraised value , the only thing is the expect that the car isnt going to be out of your sight for a period of time ..IE you cant take it to get groceries. or to work .. but its cheap .. for a car valued at $10000 the insurance is like $140 a year ..

Guess you gotta sleep in the car then? Otherwise, it would be out of your sight all night long, when most thieves like to strike anyways!

What about in the evening at home? I spend less time in a store getting groceries, than I do watching evening TV.

I'm just saying....There are flaws in their "rules" for coverage.

Yeah I tried kanetix but the cheapest rates ie. Belair direct doesn't insure cars over 20 years old.. and desjardins gave me a quote for $3507 per year. So my quote with Canada brokerlink of $2895 is much better.

I called kanetix and they told me on the phone that most of the companies they deal with don't insure cars over 20 years old.

Another question here. My dad tells me when you buy a car and go to register the vehicle that you have to pay taxes on the book value of the vehicle.

What the heck? Ontario doesn't have a single government controlled car insurance company? I guess I always assumed every province had their own like BC.

Around $260 for four months. Unsure of how much it would cost for a full year due to there being an extra fee for insuring for less then a year at a time and you cannot insure a car for only one month. That however is when insured under an experienced adult driver with no accidents which has about a 40% discount.

P.S. $2,900 CND is $2,740 USD.

Hello all. Anyone from ontario have silverwheels? I know they require you to have minimum of 10 years driving experience. Its for classic cars only. Yearly rates are very low considering you have 10 years of driving record and you have 2nd car for daily driving. If someone already got this, what are the other requirements?

Silver Wheels has a lot of restrictions. Basicaly you can't use your car for anything other than cruising or showing. IMO not worth it

Re: Insurance rates discussion

In AB, when I first got my own car I was paying $320 a month for liability coverage only... clean record and they didn't care what kind of car it was, just because I was a male under 25. After a couple years the gov't figured out insurance companies were price fixing and legislated lower rates, I went down to about $130 a month. On my 25th birthday, it dropped to about 85 bucks a month. I've tried getting a deal to insure my Camaro as a weekend driver since I have another DD, but the best the insurance companies around here will offer is about 10% cheaper than the DD, and with some serious restrictions. So I want to get Silver Wheels on mine soon as I turn 26. Far as I'm concerned, driving the fun car IS cruising and showing it, as long as you're not taking it to work or groceries etc...

For an 04 Cadillac CTS with full coverage and 2 million liability = $140 (Bellaire Direct).
For an 86 Trans Am with minimal coverage $100 (Desjardins).

Something like that yes, you'll have to look into getting a used car package :

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dan...cle/used.shtml

It'll let you know there, here's the quote anyway about halfway down the page:

Quote:
Pay the retail sales tax. At the time of the transfer, the Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office collects the tax. The amount of tax is based on the purchase price or the wholesale value, whichever is greater

GeneralLC - yeah, we were screaming for it here as well as Nova Scotia because rates were getting way out of hand back in the early 2000's. My insurance went from $180 a month to being dropped completely and getting quotes of $500 and more to reinstate it. My insurance was dropped because the company i was with went under, and Allianz picked up their clients.

To this day I will not even by travel insurance from them if it's automatically included with a packaged deal - I'll by it separate from someone else. They dropped me cause they considered me a "High Risk" driver with 1 speeding ticket at 10 over and the wife hitting some ice and bumped some trees. Didn't even hit anyone else!! At the time, that was about 5-6 years in the past too and almost off our record.

Anyway, long story short it's starting to get back in line at least. Mine will be going down to $220 after April when my last 10 over ticket comes off. Only have had 4-5 speeding tickets in 25 years of driving, and every one of them were in small zones where the limit drops 10km/hr for 2-3 km. Almost like they plan speed traps right from the start hehe! I usually go 10 over the limit if there's no one around, so if the limit drops 10 then i'm 20 over and they've lowered it to 10 every time.

One guy pulled me over and let me go, cause he saw my record of no tickets in my first 7 years of driving - and he told me so - said slow down, and carried on. Asked me what the hurry was and I guess he felt for me wearing my work uniform saying "I just want to get home" in a tired voice hehe! He said the same thing back to me along with the "slow down" part. Pretty cool actually.

I wish it was that simple. It's not as "free" as people make it out to be. $70 a month for BC medical isn't free. It's expensive unless your employer covers you. Even in some of those cases, the premium is taken off our wages.
