I saw this thing at Best Buy over the weekend and I started liking it. I just wanted to see if anybody had any opinions on it. I'd also like to know how much info is displayed on the small readout that shows when the deck is closed. I want a plain looking deck for my IROC, and in the closed position, this deck fits that bill.
One of my buddies just got one about 3 weeks ago and he loves it. Of course he is the kind of person that will not let anyone else touch it but I liked it alot. I dont remember too much happening on the little screen.

Otherwise, get a Alpine 7994 or a 7895.
Nice and simple, but it's got everything you need.
Actually, I like it for exactly that reason. When closed, it's very simple looking. Most of the new decks out today look retarded... including those alpines. I was planning on a JVC SH77, but then this deck came along. I've only heard from 1 person that's had both, and he said the JVC had a little better sound quality, so I'm going to have to spend some quality time with both decks to see what I prefer.
I couldnt stand them a couple of years ago when they had those goofy huge curved buttons on them, but i dont mind the new ones too much. I still dont think the aesthetics compare to a few years ago when they had the 7949 out, and the likes. They had some real nice ones then.
Then again, i cant stand any of the Pioneers now, i miss the old ones, before they began that fancy display crap....
I tell ya, if i could get all the features of the new decks, with the faceplate of my 1505, id never buy a new one again

If the 7909 had an auxilary input, I'd probably buy one of those. I used a 7804 for years and never had bad luck with it. It was very simple looking and worked good. Finally it just stopped taking the cds.
My roommate has that deck (DEH-P8400MP) and I think its alright. I'm not really a fan of the flip open type decks. I have the JVC SH707 and honestly I would recommend the JCV over the Pioneer purely because of MP3 navigation. Some of these decks are just a PITA to navigate 300 MP3 files from the deck LCD screen. One thing I have to admit though, when the Pioneer flips open it feels like its a bit cooler than my JVC, feels like it has more options, more buttons, and more stuff happening. heheheh
I'll probably never use the MP3 option. I probably won't use the bells & whistles either. All I want is a deck with a killer sound quality, an auxilary input and a very SIMPLE PLAIN appearance. Although the pioneer has all that goofy sh*t, I like it because of its plain appearance when it's closed.
Right now I'm torn between that and the JVC SH-77. I've listened to the JVC and the burr-brown DACs really make that deck sound fantastic. My concern is that I'm going to drop $350 on this Pioneer and wind up with cookie-cutter sound quality and a pile of features that I don't need... all in the name of a simple appearance.

I'm in the same boat as you. I don't like all the brushed aluminum faces or the fancy motorized face plates. I just want something black, few buttons and a big display that'll play MP3s. Unfortunately, there's not much that fits those reqs, so either I don't buy or buy something I don't want. Hmmm, the choices :sillylol:

Sorry... those are the worst looking decks I've ever seen. They look like controls for a carnival ride.

I don't mind the brushed aluminum, but I would prefer black too. The only decks out there that I REALLY like the look of are the Nak decks and the Denon decks:
NAK:
Denon:
Both are very expensive ($800 and $1,600 respectively), both have very poor reliability, and neither have an aux input. They're also 2 of the finest sounding decks ever made.
Isn't it amazing how different the high class stuff is? I remember when everything looked like that. Now car audio equipment is marketed solely to the 16-20 year old market instead of being marketed to a more broad age group. This is why every new deck has a fricking lazer show and an optional disco ball.
I thought you wanted something that *looked* simple, hehehehe.
I do, but somehow buying a deck that has a higher book value than my car doesn't seem smart. It's over $3k for that deck & associated DSP box... if you can even find one. The only Alpine dealers that can sell that deck are the ones that send one of their employees to a multiple day training session that they have to pay for out of their own pockets.
thats really interesting. I went to Advantage and typed in that model number to see what the cost price was, and no product showed up. I guess now i know why, lol.
Same deal on their high end Processors.
I did actually play with that Pioneer for awhile when i was at Best Buy here, my only compaint with it is that it looks out of place when its open. Thats the same complaint i had with the FantomFace XL series from Alpine. When the face is inside, it looks like a normal deck, but i dont think you could ever get a finished look with the radio on and it in the out position.
Im in the middle of trying to make an LCD screen look at home in my car, and it would be stupid to have a deck that always looks out of place because something "unfolds" or "swivels", ya know?
But if youd leave it closed for showing or whatnot, i can see the appeal.
Actually the info on that Pioneer doesnt look that bad at all.... (For people like me) it does play WMA and MP3, (and it has a Spec Analyzer, hehehehehehe).
I cant see the sound quality being Horrible, the crossovers are only 12dB/oct, but i think i remember you saying you used the ones on your amps anyway.

Go ahead: open the motorized flap face and throw down a WMA- or MP3-encoded disc. Or pop in a regular CD, CD-R, or CD-RW: the DEH-P8400MP plays them all, and it also controls Pioneer CD changers. The Organic Electroluminescent (OEL) display will totally transform your dash with full-motion and 3D graphics, and when the motorized flap face is open, the OEL's dual display areas provide you with two sets of info. A MOSFET 50 Watts x 4 power supply delivers big, clean audio and you get three pair of Hi-Volt (4V) RCA pre-outs if you want to add amps. Sound Focus EQ (SFEQ) gives you independent bass and treble control for front and rear so you can fine-tune your music. The DEH-P8400MP is XM Ready and comes with a slim remote.

There are also some out there with no buttons. I dont know if you like those or not. Like the old JVC El Chameleon (sp?). There is also a new one out (not sure who makes it ... pioneer or sony?) that is completely flat and touch screen but still the size of a regular deck. It looked very simple and plain because of the lack of any buttons or knobs. But it still had alot of good features. Not sure on sound quality tho.
Have you looked at a clarion HD-X10 http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...ephotos&a=&s=0 It has good sound, aux input and as for the look thats completly up to you. I've had mine for about a year now and have had no problems.

I'm thinking about the eclipse. I don't care for how they look though. The blue display doesn't come close to matching my car. They sound incredible though. I just hate the cheezy volume knob on the eclipse. They are almost flush with the face, so they're a pain in the *** to use.
As you all can see... I'm extremely fussy.
I want a simple looking deck with a red display, great sound quality and a nice volume knob.
I'm willing to sacrifice the red display now though. I've come to terms with the fact that there's nothing of any decent quality with red, so I'm probably going to change the illumination color of all my gauges to something else. Maybe back to white.
Originally posted by Kj Rockz Dude, I'm telling you the Alpine 7894.
It has Red ilumination, and it kicks ***.
It is very simple, and has all the poer and options you could ever use.
it Kicks arse.....
Maybe. I've got an alpine 7863 in my GTA and the remote lead quit working after a very short period of time. Otherwise I do like the deck though. I've always been pretty happy with my alpine stuff.
I wonder if their red illumination looks better than the "amber" illumination on last year's decks. The amber shined through the green buttons, and during the day it looked like ***. Still... I might consider that deck.
Where'd you find that it's got red illumination? Everywhere I see it says green/amber.
Guys... I appreciate all the suggestions, but I was more or less just looking for info on that Pioneer. Getting 5,000 different suggestions is nice and all, but I don't really have the time or energy to explain why I don't like all 5,000 of the decks.
ive got the 8400mp in my vert and well, its the second one ive gone through. the first one worked fine till in installed full infiniti system and after the f*ckin hassle of recutting the rear panels to get the huge speakers to fit, then the thing starts shutting off on me. it eventually would not come back on. so after some *trading* at best buy, i get a brand new one. installed it a week ago, rewired my whole system thinking that there was a short somewhere, and now it runs for a little while and shuts off. ive been told that there is either a short somewhere (replaced all the wiring already), my alternator is overcharging (?????), or its overheating because of the heat blowing on it (thought so but it also shuts off with the top down and the air on). so i have no clue whats wrong with it but ive installed countless stereos and this is the first one that has given me alot of sh*t. now its too cold to sit outside and mess with it, so i dont know whats wrong with it. if anyone has similar problems or if theirs works fine, please let me know.
Originally posted by Justins86bird Why couldn't they just have made a 1.5 DIN deck?
Pioneer actually makes a 1.5 DIN deck. But it's been out quite a while and looks a bit dated. You're right. I would have liked to see a new 1.5 instead of this.
Originally posted by Kj Rockz That is the "Amber" for this year.
I'll see if I can get a pic of it in my car tonight.....
Cool. Can you do me a favor and take a pic of it during the day with the red illumination too? I'd be interrested in seeing how good it looks in daylight.
Originally posted by Justins86bird Doh! The 7995 prolly wont either cause it's got the same screen. Thanks for the info I was considering that deck, but I guess it's out now.
Dang, i havent ever met so many people that were so patient as to wait for EXACTLY what they want. I just get something close and grab it right then and there.
