I searched for 6x9 info but there's just too much out there.....pardon if this has been covered before. If there's been a good discussion on this before, you can just give me a link. Thanks.
Anyways, I'm tired of not having the space my 12's take up in the hatch area, plus the box is just plain ugly, and the subs aren't that great anyway, so I'm going to get rid of the whole box.
I don't consider myself a connoisseur of car audio by any means, so I won't miss them much. This also means I don't need the most expensive 6x9's! I'm willing to pay up to about $150 for a set, and would like to get good bass out of them as well, in order to make up a little bit for the loss of the subs, get it?
I really appreciate any and all suggestions, thanks!
Well, the problem with our cars is the small space behind the 6x9 location. It does not have enough volume to produce a good bass , more of a mid range.
I had a pair of $40 Kraco's in the rear deck of my 70 chevelle that sounded better than my $200 JBL's that I have in my camaro.
Do you have the rear storage cover?
If not , make one from 1/2 inch plywood and cut your 6x9 ovals and mount them there. you'll get alot better bass.
Or get a Bazooka Tube subwoofer, they fit nicely in the storage well.

to get good bass you need to install the 6X9's in some sort of enclosure...which is often easier said than done if you want them in the stock locations. I would suggest taking the stock baffles behind the 6x9s and fibreglassing them so they are solid and dont leak air

Well most of the reason I'm asking is because I want my space back, so i don't want to close up the lower part either. I'm cool with sacrificing the bass, I just want to compensate as much as I can, ya know? So basically I'm going to stick with the stock location, and do the best I can. What sets should I look at? Thanks.
If you don't mind loosing your spare tire, you could put a box in there and be out of the way.

I really liked those Alpine Type-S ones you listed....how much better would it be to have these Type-R's if I was willing to spend the cash or find a better price?
I agree with everyone else, the factory location isn't going to help you out with much bass, if any.
Something else you might want to look into is not using 6x9's, but using 5 1/4" component speakers on a custom plate over the 6x9 hole. Go to a stereo shop and have them turn on a set of 5 1/4's for you... and see how they sound. Make sure they don't "accidently" leave a subwoofer on.

Yeah I highly appreciate that, but what I'm saying is, if I was willing to stretch a bit or see if I can find a better price, would those be worth it or is there a minimal difference?
As for putting in a different size speaker and do it component style, I'm sure it's more than possible and probably not too difficult, but I'd just rather buy a set of 6x9's and slap them in rather than do some converting, just for ease of use. I've got a ton of other things to get to on this car, and I just wanted to throw in some good speakers, quick and easy, so I could get that box out of there and move on to other projects.
I really don't think spending any more money is gonna improve the sound your gonna get from the stock location.
Like I said earlier, I have JBL's (older model) similar to JBL P953 ,but they still don't have much bass there. The mids and highs are great though.
Maybe if you open it up as much as you can behind there and DYNAMAT or use a rubberized undercoating. I've been meaning to try this myself, just hasn't been a priority.
I'm running a set of RF 6.5" components in my sail panels. I paid an arm and a leg and still don't like 'em - but the bass is definitely much better than the best 6x9s I've heard.
my vote goes for either Infinity or Polk audio plates. they have a sepperate woofer and tweeter. Cant go wrong!. Also I would recomend the same for the 4-6s. Im gonna prolly be getting polk audio plates for my dash and rear soon.... Hey do you have a car with the 6-9s on the sides of the rear seat or in the plastic in the hatch. I know theres two kinds. Maybe you fab something up. Maybe like an easily made custom idea....I know they make portable 6x9 boxes too!

Not much. Just remove the 6x9 metal plate and make a plate out of 1/2" MDF for the 8". Cut out the hole for the sub's basket which will be less then 8" (varies my manufacturer) and mount the plate up and dremel away any of the sheet metal that may protrude into the area of the cutout, which shouldn't be much. You'll want to get a free air sub or a midbass diver like the Kicker Resolution RMB8. Phoenix Gold also makes a shallow depth Titanium Elite 9" midbass driver.
in a z28 dont exspect to get much bass from the 6x9's but i will have to say any higher end speakers will help, i have 3 vehicals with all kinds of stuff in them, i will recoment infinity kappas for speakers now, on etronics.com i got the 6x9 3 ways for 136.00. and did the kappa 4x6 plates, in my s10 blazer, i like them more then the boston acoustics i put in my z28, but the infinitys are very very deep, i had trouble fitting them into my blazer, im not sure if they will fit in a z28 though. my bostons cost me almost double what my infinitys did and i like the infinitys ALOT better. but if anyone is looking for speakers go to etronics.com the 6x9 kappas in crutchfield are like 250 ish and etronics i got them for 136.
I just put a pair of Infinity 9602i 6" x 9" in the factory location with adapters to make them fit. I'm very disappointed in the sound quality out of them. They don't handle much bass at all.
I tried them with and without enclosures and no difference. They'll be coming out as soon as I find something better!!!
That was a waste of $200.

well did u have an AMP going to them? if not u wont get crap out of them
Nope, no amp. I just have them running off a Pioneer DEH-P7500MP deck. Is an amp going to increase their ability to take more bass or would I be better off replacing them with a couple of 6 1/2" component speakers like Infinity 6000cs or 62.5i?
I'm trying to get a half decent set up without spending thousands of $$. Or should I just get an amp and a sub?
When you get into a set of high-end speakers like that, they are less efficient at handling power, thus their higher power rating. A speaker with a low power rating will sound good off of deck power, because it is more matched to the power being put out by the deck. My eclipse's sounded like *** until I amped them; then they sounded great. Put a decent amp on them, and you'll notice a huge difference.
Understood. Thanks Eric. Although I was hoping to get away from having to run a bunch of wires. I hate wiring. But I guess I'll have to if I want decent sound.
I wonder if you could make an enclosure out of wood or fiberglass, and then put in a 4-5" speaker, then put an appropriate port hole. If you could match the right speaker, with the right port size and internal volume of the enclosure, it seems like you could make some decent bass... I mean, somehow a new camaro has bass comparable to a 10 inch subwoofer (monsoon system). And they are using 4 inch speakers I think.
Or maybe you could pull out all that black foam or whatever it is... and somehow reinforce the entire lining of that area with some material like dynamat or some more solid material like fiberglass... there is actually a great deal of space in that panel its just not utilized.

Home Depot? What is the stuff called? Our Home depots suck compared to the ones you guys have down there. Especially the one in the city I live in. But I'll go have a look for sure.
just find some sort of thin insulator material... I guess thicker would be better but whatever. I think its part rubber but I'm not sure.. its definitely not work it to buy the name brand unless its free.

What type of specs should I look into for an amp in order to power 6x9's. They say that they have am RMS of 110 watts and 300 peak - but I'm an idiot with car audio.
Also, is it hard to set it all up? Should I try myself or have it done professionally. I know the basics of installing audio - I did my deck perfectly, but amps confuse me.
most amps come with detailed instructions for installations and function (if you buy it new)
as a general rule, a speaker won't produce much bass if it is 'tight' if you can move it with your hand a little and the cone moves freely up and down, even if it seems a little flimsy, it will produce more bass. This is how I check speakers, and it has always worked for me.
I would second the 5.25" component setup. get yourself a 4-CH amp and power all 4 speakers from it.
you will get more bass because you can set the crossover for 100Hz and up, since the speakers can't deal with it anyways, they will sound much better and actually produce more bass since they aren't crapping out. set a higher crossover for the fronts like 200Hz...especially if you have stock speakers.
with the amp, keep the crossover up and the gain down and slowly turn them until it sounds good without burning the speakers up.
Just to step back of all the theoretical mountings and custom setups; Before my sub(s), I used a pair of 3-Way Infinity Kappa 6x9's with a decent amp powering them. The performed very well and allowed almost all frequencies to be heard, but not necessarily (felt like a sub).
