as we all know the 2 dash speakers and 2 rear speakers dont really leave us sounding full, so i get the idea to maybe throw 4 inch speakers in the door panels, cut a hole, mount it in somehow...... but i dont know if i will have the clearance.....
has anybody done this before? will there be enough clearance ? what size speakers to use, etc. etc. pics?
Audio system (146.7dbs)
Sony CDX-CA760X head unit
3 10" Kicker L7's (in wall right behind front seats)
Pioneer Premier 720X (subs)
Pioneer Premier 220X (mids/highs)
2 pioneer 6.5" in dash
kicker 5.25" and 4" in each kick panel
kicker tweeters in place of small vents
pioneer premier center channel in headliner(not hooked up yet)
Viper 800 ESP alarm
I'm not sure as I didn't install them, but I'll take the dash pad off sometime tomorrow afternoon and check on what was modified. I know when I took it off last time the speakers stayed attached to the dash pad and all I did was unhook the wires.

Fitting 6.5's in the doors of a thirdgen without power windows is a tight fit but possible. Fitting them into a car with power windows requires you to build out the door panel the full depth of the speaker, which in most cases looks retarded.

because i have 3-way components, i chose to put the 6 1/2" in the door. i did have to use a 3/4" spacer (larger would be better) and i put some foam on the backside of the speaker magnet because they were nearly touching the window motor. i would like to eventually build the bottom out a bit (redo the entire carpet area of the door panel so it at least kinda looks stock). i think there are a couple pics of my setup (they may be from when i had my previous kickpods), but you can get the general idea. dont cut into the door if you dont have to. if i could do it again, i would probably just get a 2-way comp set to make the install a lot easier.
I checked on the modifications that were done to put the 6 1/2's in the dash. As I stated before some of the grill part of the dash pad was cut away to set the speaker down in the dash so it can be screwed from the top into the dash pad itself. It looks like the old 4x6 metal mounting plates were removed and that was enough. Couldn't be sure as to what all was removed because I don't know what is there to begin with, but it shouldn't require any major mods other than removing that old mounting bracket.
Now that's not to hard is it?

So the speaker actually is sitting on top of the dash...They cut a hole and screwed it directly into the dash pad? I'd really like to see some pictures. If it looks good I might do it...I have an extra dash pad I am planning on tweeding to go along with the rest of my tweed work, And some pretty 6.5 in there would look cool...Maybe I could even angle the speakers for a different look...

Yeah, It looks like there may be some metal underneath the dash pad to strengthen it up and screw into. The dash pad is carpeted so it looks like a pretty neat install. I'll try to get some pictures sometime next week.

Actually, you can fit 8" woofers in the door with power windows. That is what I have.
The window motors have to be repositioned and metal had to be cut for clearance. I used to compete in IASCA, and guy who did most of the cutomizing in my car figured how to do it. The door panel sticks out about 1 1/2 to 2 inches and the whole bottom half of the panel has been redone.
I have also seen people mount two 5 1/4 inchers in the doors, but they stuck out about 3 inches from the door panels.
