Check out my new sub box!

I set my new sub box into place today just to see how it'd fit. I'm going to paint it when I paint the car, now all I need to do is find some good subs with nice looking magnets to invert- let me know your suggestions.

Yes its fiberglass, and no I didnt not make it myself. I bought it off of a guy who had it in his 4th gen T/A. I think I'm going to fill those emtpy holes with Alpine Type-Rs or Infinity Kappa Perfects.

make sure you don't put the subs in backwards... that looks ricediculous... plus they don't sound as good IMO... but the box looks nice, and good luck on finding some good subs.

Well they will have to be inverted because the way the box was designed, the depth is very shallow. They won't sound any different inverted and besides what's so "ricediculous" about inverted subs?

the square in the middle looks kinda unfinished. I say clean it up a little bit, and stick some nice subs in and itll look better. I think it looks kinda rushed. It prolly could have looked alot better...

It might just be that its not tan and the interior is kinda taken apart.....U plan on painting it again?

subwoofers are intended to project sound from the outside surface.. I guess it wouldn't make much difference... but the simple design of it is being mis-used...

that aside.. haven't you noticed that pretty much any import driving around is full of reversed subs?

If that's what you're into... then by all means, no one will try and stop you.

There's nothing wrong with inverting a sub as far as I know. Mainly it's more for show. Some people like to show off the baskets or magnet sizes.

Only time I would consider it would be if the box was so small I couldn't fit the baskets in it normal. Which I did at first for my box until I realized it was not an option.

I've read somewhere that you must also switch the polarity when inverting subs, but that was an internet webpage. I would not trust it. Maybe Jim or another member how knows for sure can post about that.

If you want to see some crazy stuff look at:

BTW what size of subs fit in that box? The cut outs look fairly small.

that would explain why my deck can reverse the polarity of the subs... but they don't sound much different... but as far as the physics go, you would want to reverse the sub

Yeah far as I see it I would assume the basket structure and magnet would get in the way. But for a project like this there's not really any other choice unless you can find a 8" sub that's 2 inches deep or whatever.

the way I see it.. if the box is too small for your woofer to fit in.. it's just too damn small... but I'm really interested in how this setup sounds.

The cutouts are for 12" subs, they will be inverted, and I will like them whether you will or not!

Here's a pic of the box (with inverted subs) in the guy's car I bought it from.

I put the passengers in the well, duh! Actually passengers aren't really an issue; I'm not building this car to be a taxi anyhow.

nothing fancy... that's why its in the well... because there is a higher chance of carrying passengers than there is of me carrying something small enough to actually fit in that rear well....

True that the well is most useless (the only thing mine was ever filled with before the subs was spare, or not so spare, parts) and I never really carry passengers, but I just want the seats there. If I want an 80's/90's GM with no back seat, I'll buy a vette!

yeah I just figure you might as well utilize the space in the most efficient manner as permitted... but if he really likes the sound of the close-range subwoofers... then more power to him... maybe he can put some (extra) subs in the well for the really deep bass... or some amps or some custom screens or something else.

i just have one question why you bashing the guy? is it because he did something you didnt have the balls to do? it isnt a finished product. maybe he is making it out to be more show like the guy before him..

f-body owners are the worst when anyone does anything out of the normal.. even if it does look good.

Reverse mounting a sub does nothing to hinder the sound that comes out. All subs do is move air. You should always try standard and reverse polarity in any sub setup to see which one sounds the best (most likely in this case it will be reverse polarity)

so if it doesn't matter if the sub is mounted backwards... and you say all they do is "move air"... then the shape, material, and orientation of a woofer is not important? -- as long as it moves air...right? Hrm I don't agree. I'm pretty sure a woofer has a recessed surface so it can project sound away from the box... you don't see too many woofer surfaces that protrude from the sub casket, do you?

While it's possible you may never hear a difference when the sub is mounted backwards, there are obviously things getting in the way.. such as the casket itself, the magnet and all the voice coils.... all the air has to be redirected around all this stuff, instead of just coming out and projected as originally designed.

same argument when you compare reflecting the bass off the rear hatch window, and having down firing subs... stuff gets in the way... the sound is similar, but there are clear differences in sound.

why not mount all your speakers backwards? all tweeters do is "move air", same with your mid range components...

The only reason I'd do it is for space, like this guys situation.

plus whatever he does with the box doesn't really matter, as long as it sounds good enough to him... might as well mount it backwards or whatever the newest fad is... long as it sounds the way he wants.

Well i think it looks hideous in your car, but absolutly amazing in his 4th gen so clean it up a bunch and it should be awesome.

As for it being in the back seat whats wrong with you guys? Hell i pulled my back seats out and havent replaced em with anything because i HATE driving people around. All i want is a girl in the passenger seat. The subs add enough weight anyways who needs another 250 pounds of fat in your back seats.

that's true, but if you're gonna have weight in your car you can place anywhere, wouldn't you want it over the rear wheels as much as possible?

Thats is right shape doesn't matter. Ever seen a flat cone, or a square cone? How about a dome midrange or tweeter?. The reason why you have to mount tweeters or mids with the cone facing towards you is because high frequencies are directional, low frequencies are non directional. Going off of the reasons of what you have said then the idea of ported boxes, loaded horns, and the various types of bandpass boxes really don't serve a purpose. Each of these utilize both sides of the speaker cone which is what makes them so efficient. The ideas of reflecting actully has to do more with the length of distance the sound has from the speaker to your ear. The more distance (within reason) the more the bas has time to form the bigger sound wave.

seems to me that the magnet and stuff on the back of the sub will to an extent muffle the sound, compared to being projected straight outta the normal surface, with zero obstructions.

Not my cup O' tea, but if that is what he likes, then more power to him. I do think Scrap may be right, but the amount of sound deflected or cancelled out by the basket & magnets is probably negligible. Anyway, no biggie I think. I do have to say that I have my poor lone 10" sub in the well still in the truck box from my Explorer. Gotta go with what you have sometimes!!

just to add a little and to reinforce what has already been said, a bass wave is 15 feet long and no it doesnt matter which way the face. thats why subs sound better in suvs or hatchback because there is more room for the bass wave.

it looks nice, not my style either but whatever blows ur skirtup.

oh ya depending on your budget put JL Audio W7's in they are amazing sounding and the back is simple but clearly stated. very sharp subs. only prob is theyre somthing like 500 each so thats 2k for you and a good amp would be the JL Audio 1000/1 and youll need 2 and theyre 1000k each. sooo 4k?

good luck!

Are you saying that a bass wave is always 15 feet long? That doesn't make much sense.. what "length" are we discussing? The "wavelength"? I'm almost 100% positive that that's completely dependent on the frequency you are listening to.

here's an interesting read- http://www.realtraps.com/art_waves.htm

the shortest wave your gunna get from a sub is pretty long.. longer than the car so there is no worries there. if you gunna spring for a w7 i think that 2 would suffice in our cars.

my two 15"s can also do that, sound nice and full inside but not kill the neighborhood... at 1% volume, hahaha... but I like to have the ability to annoy people too... you know, just in case.

W7's are a little much for my budget. I'm looking at either Infinity Perfects or Alpine Type R's. I'm leaning heavily towards the Type R's because they can be had on ebay for about 200 dollars a pair and the RMS wattage would fit just right with the Soundstream VGA600.2 I'm also looking at.

That's quite funny as I do that too... I'll purposely change the song to Vanilla Ice, or some oldie or something... but nothing is as hilarious is cruising by some 'gangsters' on the east side of Austin, and playing vanilla ice... its basically like saying, "Hell yeah we're white, and we stole rap from you!" -- or at least we tried... I like playing vanilla ice, eminem, lil' wyte and a few underground artists that are hilariously-white... just makes my day.

it's even funnier when you have a system that makes the onlookers jealous, and you're playing some music they really hate... like when I hear people playing country or classical.
