What you guys think of this set up?

2 12 " JL Audio W1s with a 1200 watt Sound Storm amp. The guy at the Audio Store had a 35th aniversary camaro with one JL W7 and a 1000 watt JL amp and I listened to it and it hits hard let me tell you(this was with rock music too). He said that the new W1s hit harder then the old W6s and and 2 W1s would sound just as loud if not louder then the W7. What you guys think about this set up?

I'm yet to hear the new W1's, but I did go take a look at them last week. I'd love to pick these up for my fiberglass box, but I'm not sure I'll have the room.

I can't imagine those W1's being louder than a W7 though, that'd be a little odd for JL, or any company to make such an affordable woofer which outperforms their top notch model.

lmao.

whoever told you that is full of CRAP! the guy is just trying to sell you stuff and probably get commission off of it. no way in hell the W1s are going to be louder than a W7.

oh and by the way, the 1200watt amp that you want to run, i bet it only rms's like 400watts. if your going to get a quality sub like JL audio, then get a quality amp for it as well. like JL(very expensive) or a memphis(also expensive) or a hifonics(still expensive) but you will definately not regret it if your looking for a stereo that says its 1500 watts but actually only puts out like 300.

A W1 will never hit harder then a W7. I work at a JL dealer so I know all about them. Look at the magnetic difference. Also the power from the amp he is trying to sell you is peak power. Peak power means ****. You want to be looking at the RMS ratings. I have 2 W3v2s with a 500/1 amp. In my opinion this is a great setup for camaros. Its very easy to make bass in a camaro because there is so little air space. I can hit 135dbs with my setup and the subs sound so clean too. My system is built for Sound quailty. Let me know if you have any questions about JL's products. I'll help you out.

The way JL names their subs is the lower-models subs have a lower number...
I agree with everyone else, if you're going to spend the money, and you want a loud system that doesn't sound like butt, save up, get an w7, and get a JL amp to go along with it. They're more costly, but have AWESOME features, well worth the money. Under that, I'd suggest a Rockford Power amp. (Power not Punch)... I was an asst manager for a car audio shop, and I've seen the rockford guys demo the power of those amps by running a table saw. Cool stuff!

i run 2 jl audio w3v2 subs with a hifonics amp and i push 144db. dont under estimate hifonics. they can push some decent power. i have a brutus 1000D mono block.

granted, if u hooked up the JL audio 500/1 amp those subs would push a lot harder, but that amp is also a little bit more expensive than the hifonics i have.

i hit such a high db rating because of the custom box and stuff built and the way its hooked up. just sound quality and placement lets my system hit that hard. i also run more than one car battery to support it and keep the voltage rating consistant.

The way the box is built has the most to do if your system is loud and sounds good. The box is everything. Are you looking to go with a ported or sealed box?

basically true. also depends on the accoustics of your car. ive seen in a stereo compitition before one 12" sub hit 146 db. BUT if he moved his box 3 inches to the right or left it dropped down to 138 db.

you just gotta mess around with it until u find a percect placement and/or sound barrier

thats why most spl competitors just fill the vehicle with speakers.. no need to worry about the placement in relation to the mic

Sound "Storm", huh?

One of the most widely known amp manufacturers is called SoundStream. Of course SoundStream was bought out by Power Acoustik, but still - right there, you know that Sound Storm amp is junk. You never want to buy an amp with a name that "sounds like" a real manufacturer's name. (Such as, never buy a Rockwood.)

And the fact he's trying to sell you a knockoff amp would make me question that store to begin with! I don't know how much that Sound Storm amp is going for, but say it's going for $200... you'd get a much better amp if you spent $200 on a brand name 50x2 RMS amp.

i think its all dependent on the box on the loudness you can get out of a sub. because i had 2- 10'' jensen subs in i think 1 sqft of airspace in a dual bandpass box ported. and i hit 136 dbs. I would like it to obviously hit harder but thats pretty much maxing out the subs. It was matched with a jensen 600 amp at the time i think or it was hooked up to the mtx. it was awhile ago. the subs are only bout 500w peak and maybe 150 rms. the amp is only 200-300 rms . so alot fo it has due to the build configuration of the box, but that was on the old mic. and on the new mic i hit just 130dbs. i forget the names of them but it was an IASCA qualifying event here in ontario. (i don't compete just to see what the system can do every now and then when i make a change) its more geared towards quality now then spl.

also it does make a big difference SQL and SPL wise where you put you box.....

i had cut my rectangle box in half and took the rear plastic out to fit it facing rearward in the well( it could vibrate you chest and was only one 12" running 200RMS maybe)

b4 i cut the box i had it on the rear deck area facing up with both subs( it had worse SQL and SPL)

since i started to prep my car for the FB project i have put the rear plastic back and foiled the area so the half-box is back on the rear lid sucking it up

First off, I'm still not convinced of your 144db, but that aside... do you really think that a 500 watt RMS JL audio amp puts out more than a 1000 watt RMS Hifonics amp? Maybe I read your post wrong...

First off I think everyone had mis understood me. I didn't mean that he said the new W1 will hit harder but the 2 together will be right up with it. Also i am looking at running a sealed box down in the well.

well i think that if you x over the mic at 20hz then change the bass boost to 100 and teh gain to 4.1234 then you can hit 170db with stock 6x9s...
