Need speaker suggestions

Hi, I've been looking at a new sound system for my '84 firebird, but am not sure what to get.

I've heard that 6x9s are more for subless systems and provide more bass than components, but component sets sound better. I finally decided that I'd go with a component set and a sub. From here, I'm not sure on the specifics.

My budget is technically $500, but I'd prefer closer to $400 if its possible with my setup. I want something that sounds clear and is loud. I want more than just bass (so the components need to be powerful enough to balance the sub). Also, my headunit (Sony CDX-GT200) only has 1 preamp out, so I'll need a 4-channel amp capable of 3-channel output (2 normal setup and 2 bridged).
I would prefer a 12" sub. Suggestions for brands/models for subs, amp, and components?

As for the component set, I was thinking of placing them in the 6x9 spots and fabricate some kind of a bracket for them (I don't really want to try to create a custom kick panel and I like speakers at head level as opposed to below me). Anyone done this? Any problems?

You might be very happy with hooking up your fronts(4x6) to the head unit then finding a four channel amp for 6x9's in the mid and 10's or12's as the sub. I would look at www.crutchfield.com for lots of good info on products but shop around when you find something you like because they can be a little higher then a lot of others. You can't go wrong with Alpine. If you have any more questions just ask.
