I have an Alpine 3552 running my front end and a Jl for the subs I've had my
Alpine for the better half of 10 yrs. This past week it started to cut out after running for 15 minutes or so. They both sit in the well under my box, the Alpine can just about cook an egg heat wise and the JL is cool to the touch. So here is my question will moving the amp above the fuel tank give enough cooling considering it's age?? or has this amp run its life?? I've always had my amps under my subs with no trouble till last week. Second question: If I have to replace my Alpine I've forgotten the power ratings of the 3552 so could some one refresh my memory on what it puts out. I run 2 way seperates in the dash, 6 inches in the doors and 6x9s in the pillars off that amp.
I can't give you a definite answer, but I have had similar experience with an Apline amp (MRV-F307). Mine is already sitting on top of the fuel tank. It started cutting out for a while, and now only channels 1 and 4 output anything. I've taken the amp apart and nothing is burnt. I can even run test tones through all the channels while hooked up to a test bench, but in the car channels 2 and 3 just don't work (and I've confirmed the head unit and cables are not the problem). I'm now in the market for a new 4 channel amp.
You can try moving it, but with the sun coming down directly through the hatch window, they still heat up a lot.
you've had it for a long time, may just be coming to and end, but at least you got good use out of it.. i would try moving because somethings definitly wrong if its getting that hot, whether its just air circulation or if its crapping out
Heat=To much current. Measure the resistance of all the speakers on the amp. If there all good then it's probably a bias problem IN the amp.

I just replaced my aging, 2 out of 4 dead channel Alpine amp (the one I mentioned a few posts up) with a new Alpine MRP-F250 4 channel (40 RMS x 4 @ 4 ohms). My subs are louder and my voltage guage doesn't dip below 12 volts like it did with the old amp. I'm now thinking the old amp had a major problem that caused it to pull way too much current. As in although channels 2 and 3 didn't output anything, the channels were still using max current (YIKES). Now that there is more current available for the system, the subs sound MUCH louder.
