How to replace the screen bulb

I just picked up what i believe is a 93-97 Firebird Delco CD Player...at the junkyard i got it from i wired it to my trucks battery to test it and it worked like a charm, now i get it home and the sceen works when you direct light at it in the front or if you try and get light behind it it works, but it doesn't light up on it's own. My issue is the bulb behind the screen won't light up. This may be broad enough for more people to answer...but how do you get that bulb out...it's got like a plastic socket with a wedge in it and i tried a screw driver but it keeps distorting the plastic and i don't want to break it. How can i get the socket out...and by any chance is my local auto store going to have this light bulb...it looks weird.

Attatched is a link to the pics of the radio...i can get more if needed.

Re: How to replace the screen bulb

Re: How to replace the screen bulb

I had the same problem with my radio like that in my Grand Prix. I searched on the clubgp.com and found that you just need to soder an led light that can be found at radio shack. I do not remember the part number off hand but this is a common problem with this style of radios.

Re: How to replace the screen bulb

i have thoght about this...but i don't want a circle of light that an LED would produce being so close to the screen, if it was far enough away it would be broad enough to cover the entire screen but i'm just worried about the spot light affect. But i have thought about this but another issue is i don't like screwing around with resistors and the 12v direct ones are never all that bright. Do you know what color they chose? Red, red/orange, or white?

Re: How to replace the screen bulb

The stock blub is white. I recently found a pontiac tape deck in a grand prix in the junk yard with that bulb. I am currently using that bulb, so I would check a grand prix fourm or try your local pontiac parts department.

Re: How to replace the screen bulb

yea i'm going to a junk yard 2morrow, hoping to find something, otherwise it's the pontiac parts dept. I called them the other day and they didn't wanna do squat over the phone. I explained the year and the cars that they were in, i explained what it looked like. All he could tell me was that he didn't know what bulb i needed yada yada yada. From my understanding from that year span of like 94-2000ish...it was all the same...AM/FM; AM/FM/Cass; and AM/FM/CD. All the same bulb all the same setup so why he wants me to drive 30 miles to him (i live 30 miles from 3 different pontiacs...i'm in the boonies, lol) to figure out which bulb it is is beyond me. Seems pretty easy to find. I looked online for all of 5 hours last night and i found one spot...corvette something, and they got the bulbs that i need, but $20 shipped!? is it just me or is that insane??? The $3 shipping is aight with me...but $17 for that tiny a$$ bulb?! IDK maybe i'm just cheap as hell or sumthing but damn...i just spent $25 on the damn radio...now i gotta spend $20 just to see what it says?! nu huh...i'll find something in the junk yard...or make my own either bulb or LED.
