Anybody remember the Audioform door panel pods for the F-Body's

Back in the early 90's there was a company called Audioform (I think it's Q-Logic now) That made abs door panel pods specific to certain cars s10's, toyota truck, mustangs, camaro, etc

I actually had a pair of the toyota truck versions

Here is one I found on ebay for the 87-92 Mustang

Does anybody have any pictures of the 82-92 camaro version? I can vaguely picture it in my head but would like to see them again

I happen to have a set of the F-body pods sitting out in the garage that I just stripped out of my 92 Camaro. I'll see if I can't dig up the camera and take a pic

I had a set in the first bird I had; I'll try to find a pic and post it. They look a lot like the ones for the mustang.

I had a custom set of door panels made. Cost me $300.00. Had the plastic insert painted same colour as the car. Look similiar to the Q-logic panel

Just an idea

i like those, if it were possible i'd ask to take it out so we could see how they made it. But if it were me i'd say no and leave it intact :P

Looks nice though, have you fitted your speakers in there if so hows the clearance?

Re: Anybody remember the Audioform door panel pods for the F-Body's

These are the Q-Form kick panels in my '83 TA, with Focal 136K Polykevlar components (5 1/4"). There is only about 1/4" clearance between the back of the speaker's voice coil and the metal of the car, so I had to hide the crossover in the dash.

Here's a link to Q-LOGIC's site. It looks like they manufacture them a little better now than they did when I bought them in '02.

If you have big feet these won't work well for you. There isn't much room for your left foot to slide between the panel and the brake. If you are missing a left leg, however, or like to drive with it hanging out the window, you're good to go.

I like the way The Project installed his speakers in the doors. Thinking back, I would have preffered to do it his way.

I had those same kick panels in grey, they sucked real bad. I sold them on eBay finally. I like the door pod idea way better, I actually built my own set of build outs from 3/4 mdf.

Thanks...They are 90% mdf. We routered and smoothed the edges. The countours are made with fibreglass and smoothed before wrapping them in vinyl.

The Image Dyanmics are a little too deep on the drivers door. I will extend the speaker with a mdf ring and make deeper grille covers to offset the speaker.

Re: Anybody remember the Audioform door panel pods for the F-Body's

Ok, I decided to tackle a set of speaker enclosures today. Since I've done this before it's a piece of cake. Here is a step by step on how I did it:

Start with a sheet of 1/2" mdf....lay out a design for the base of the door pod.

Once you come up with something, cut it out and make sure you have clearance for the armrest and make it about 1/4" smaller than the door panel width-wise to allow for material thickness.

Now if you happy with the fit of the base, use your router and flush trim bit to duplicate that into two identical pieces (passenger and drivers door)

Using your router and a sheet of 3/4" mdf......make the main piece that you will be the actual shape of the pod.

I gave it a little sweep back towards the bottom to break up the shape a bit.

To make a "frame" around that piece take some 1/8" waterproof panel board (available at auto upholstery shops or google it) and cut it into strips. I made mine about 1-1/4" to allow for the grill thickness.

This stuff is extremely flexible and will staple easily to the curve of the baffle board.

Here is how the two pieces will glue together....

Now take some stretchy material (fleece, cotton, felt, grille cloth etc) and stretch it around the frame to make the "shape" of the pod....in my case I bought some cotton (t-shirt material) off the $1 rack at walmart.

Use spray adhesive (I like 3M) and staples to attach the fabric to the wood....now you can get an idea of the actual shape of the panel.

Next, break out the fiberglass resin, hardener, brush and rubber gloves. Mix the resin according to the instructions on the canister.....take your brush and soak the fabric really well with resin....make sure it penetrates to the wood layer.

Then let it dry.

More to come........

Re: Anybody remember the Audioform door panel pods for the F-Body's

The fiberglass has dried, so now I trimmed the excess cloth out of the center of the door pod and cleaned up the edges.

I layed the pod on the door panel so you can get an idea what it will look like. I will eventually cover it in vinyl and make a removable grill for it.

Tomorrow I'll add filler and start smoothing it out

Hey Thanks,

I didn't think the audioform flows well with the third gen interior, it looks out of place.

I made some templates so I can router out duplicate door pods, lets see how these turn out and maybe we'll talk

Re: Anybody remember the Audioform door panel pods for the F-Body's

Ok, got up early to work on the pods.....now it's bondo time

Apply the filler to the area you fiberglassed, it's ok to get it on a little thick.

I level it out using my da sander with 80 grit paper, and then hand sanded with 80 grit.....after that I wet sanded with 320 to make it smooth. Keep in mind I'll have to add filler several more times until I get it where I want it.

Getting there

Re: Anybody remember the Audioform door panel pods for the F-Body's

It rained it's butt off today which made it difficult to work on my pods, but it cleared off enough for this.

I made these a month or so ago and got around to finishing them. I may end up make some new door panels (I have extra silver regal material - same as used on firebirds) and finish these to throw on eBay or something...they turned out pretty good.

If the market allows what do you think these would be worth compared to a local stereo shop? I have upholstery skills to and I'm thinking about making a combo door panel / pod ready to bolt on.
