Tape player in Factory ACDelco...help?

I have an 87 IROC (new to me, owned it for about three weeks) and the tape player will simply eject any tape that is inserted.

Lights blink on it, the heads try to engage (i think) and then it immediately spits the tape out.

The eject button is 'depressed' at all times. When I insert a tape the ject button does not rise up.

I have shined a light in to the tape deck to try and determine if anything is jammed or wedged, but I can't find any issues.

Any advice?

I don't want to swap out the unit, I like the factory system.

Paid 4K, and I am looking for factory original tires for it. The Boyd Coddingtons are scheduled to be removed.

nice Iroc dude. Yeah my tape player will play the tapes for like and hour then outta nowhere tears them up. But I won't ever switch it out, there is no other unit that will look that good in there. I've seen other third gens with modern units and they look hella fugly. Keep it for sure.

I could fix it for about 20.oo. they are really easy to fix. TheRedGoat; Your problem is either the spring that returns the eject button or the "latch" that holds it.
Adrian87camaro; Your problem is probably the pinch roller spring broken or loose.
A decent repair shop wont charge more than 75-100 to fix them.

When you insert a cassette does it switch sides(auto reverse) before it ejects? If so it most likely means that your cassette drive belt is broken.Ive actually swapped out a few cassette units into radios that werent functioning. Its not too hard to do

I did not drive it today so I can't be certain if it switches sides, but from recollection ... yes. It seemed like it was trying to switch sides.

If it does the auto reverse thing then ejects the tape its most likely a snapped drive belt. The cassette unit is a seperate part of the radio. It connects via a plug in wire harness. Therefore you dont have to replace the entire radio, just the cassette unit itself.I would just go junkyard hunting and gut one out of another delco radio. These radios are very common in 80` gm vehicles.Just make sure that the ff,rew and eject buttons are all in same spot as yours and it will be an exact fit.If you remove the bottom cover and look at the underside of the cassette unit you can usually see if the drive belt is intact or not.It looks like a black rubberband and will be wrapped around the wheels inside. That way you will know if its a good unit or not

Re: Tape player in Factory ACDelco...help?

I would say that its the drive belt also. I had the same problem with my factory bose cassette radio. Tape would eject itself when inserted. I found the drive belt was broken. Did some searching and found a replacement belt and put it in and now the tape player works fine. To pull the radio, there is 4 torx screws(t15 torx) on the radio/heater bezel. Remove the screws and remove the bezel. Should come right off. There are 4 bolts(7 or 8 mm) holding the radio in the pod. Remove those and the radio should slide right out. Just have to unplug the wires and antenna.

Mine is the Blue/Green display. Speaking of the clock. How do I set it? Blew a fuse the other day plugging in my Valentine One radar detector.

To set the clock you have to have the ign on and the radio power off so the clock is displayed.Push the set button on the right side and then toggle the time by using the scan and seek buttons for hr and min respectivly
