I'm wanting to replace the factory speakers and put in some aftermarket ones.
I'm not looking for a banging system but something that'll have some nice bass and sound (kinda like a factory bose system) without adding a sub.
preferably, i'd just like to replace the factory speakers with some nice aftermarket ones and run an amp to them (i'd like to be able to hear my music if i'm riding with the windows down).
Any ideas or suggestions on brands or a setup? I've got a newer pioneer head unit already in the car. Don't want to spend over $1000 on everything.
check on sonicelectronix.com and find a good set of 4x6s for your dash and a nice set of either 2 way or 3 way 6x9s for the rear. You might even look into changing the 6x9s to 6.5", they generally have better sound quality and you can get a component set (with tweeters and crossovers) for even better sound quality. You would just need to get the adapter plate for 6x9s to allow for 6.5s. You can look on crutchfield.com to see what im talking about. But if sticking to the easy route of 6x9s.. Buy a foam or rubber baffle to put them in when putting them back in the sail panels. Put a little poly fil in there and you get a deep rich bass from them and have real nice sound quality.
On another note, Rockford Fosgate has a new product called a Tactile Transducer. On the negative side RF has its MSRP at $450 and also wont be available until March. But this is the description from the website.

I'm glad that I found this thread. I'm trying to do the same thing. As much as I would like more bass, the wiegh reduction is more important in my IROC. I will compromise by adding an amp. Post up after your install. I'm also interested in installing a double din touch screen that will use my iPod. Or is there a unit that will fit in a stock opening? Is the stock opening a din 1/2 or din and 3/4? Thanks,

if you're just looking for a head unit that you can run your ipod off of take a look at alpine. Our opening i believe is a double din. Most common head units are going to be 1 din. But alpine offers H/U's that have bluetooth capability, satellite radio hd radio yada yada and models that either play only off of an Ipod or models that you can still be able to use cds and an ipod. I picked up a Alpine CDA-9883 off of ebay brand new (year old model but still kicka**) for $70 shipped to my house. Then i spent another $15 buying an alpine iPod cable that plugs right into the back. Very slick h/u one of the best i've owned (sony, Rockford Fosgate, and two other models of Alpines) very good unit and easy to install. We all in my family now use only Alpine H/Us they r that good
here is my old alpine its the 9820XM.. i'll get some pics of the new one when i get home today
btw its not set in all the way i was rerunning wires so it is sitting farther out than usual
now neither alpines i have are touch screens.. i didnt want to spend a couple hundred for a used one or upwards of a thousand on a new one.. the regular H/Us work fine for me

I don't smoke, so the ash tray never gets used. Has anyone removed it to use as a holder for an MP3 player or holder for an iPod? How big of an amp (watt size) to push the 4X6 and 6X9's? I only want to improve what I have, not add any extra speakers. I'm thinking the Alpine 1DA-X100 with an amp and new dash and sail panel speakers, maybe JL Audio?
