Ford Speaker/Tweeters in window triangle

As you all know, our thirdgens were not designed for optimized radio sound distribution through the cabin. Many of us add "better" speakers upfront but you all know most of the time, most audio comes from the 6x9's... My girlfriend has a Ford Taurus and it seems Ford has a good thing going (along with most newer cars) having small speakers on the window triangle. So I though why not do that to my Trans Am. Prior to the window install, I already had 10 speakers in the car. The 2 on the dash (Pioneer), the 2 6x9's (XPLOD), an additional 2 6x9's in the hatch area (Pioneer) 2 6 1/2's in the doors themselves and the 2 12's (Kickers). Everything sounded great powered by 2 amps. But I figured why not add these 2 little speakers. After the install, all I have to say is WOW. It really makes a world of a difference. Mainly because they are so close and at level and pointing at you. At first I thought they were just tweeters but I took them off to inspect and they're actually tiny 2 or 2.5 speakers. I took them off a Mercury Sable and they are the "Mach Audio" version which I believe is Ford's version of the "Monsoon" system. The install wasn't has hard as I thought. I had to cut it down to the actual triangle and got rid of the mounting lips/edges. Only used 3 bolts. 2 on the bottom and 1 on the back. The one on the back bolts into the rubber on the triangle. Theres a little nich/tunnel where the window slides in. The one on the rubber doesn't affect the window at all. I need to go back and paint that one black so its not that noticeable. There is a slight indent on the dashpad but nothing too bad. I already have the Autometer 3 gauge pod which puts an indent already. The only 2 things I need to fix are the backing. I think I'm going to get some plastic and cover the back fo the speaker housing (since you can see into it at the moment). And I want to get a sticker that says "Performance Sound" instead of "Mach Audio"... Here are some pics. Excuse the pollen and dust. Seems the trees are mating all around. For some reason, it looks much better and more stock in person than it does in the pics.

ps.for those you that will start complaining "I would never put a Ford part in my car"...get over it. I'm a hot rodder and thats what hot rodding is all about; mixing and matching different car parts to make yours unique...

Props to you man, VERY cool idea!

So they sound pretty good, eh? What are they typically called so that I may find me some?

Re: Ford Speaker/Tweeters in window triangle

I'm not sure what they would be call... I just type in "Ford tweeter" on ebay and I get alot of hits...

As far as sticking out, I'm not sure, I just looked specifically in Tauruses and Sables since my girlfriend had one. I think the Mustang's doesn't stick out as much but there aren't any newer gen Mustangs around here... I think newer GM vehicles have them aswell...

It doesn't even touch the window at all since the window presses up against the outside edge of the triangle and the bolt pulls inward. It DEFINITELY is worth doing if you enjoy hearing music clearly even with the windows down!

Re: Ford Speaker/Tweeters in window triangle

Great idea, my only change would be to find a smaller one that wont sit kind of awkwardly...

My input:
After seeing your pictures, it reminded me of my buddies 99GT with the mach system, it had door triangle tweeters too... and if I remember right, they were a bit more compact.

Re: Ford Speaker/Tweeters in window triangle

You can get the same effect by taking some 3/4" mdf, cutting out a tringangle pattern to fit that area, router the edges round and cover the whole thing with grill cloth.

Just flush mount the tweeter before you cover it, then attach it to the triangle

This is what I did instead of the triangle, coupled with a set of 6.5" mid basses in the doors it's all I need.

Re: Ford Speaker/Tweeters in window triangle

Thats not bad. I too have some 6.5's in the door pods and these still made a difference. I think the dash idea is cool, but my only problem with that is the sound still has to bounce of the windshield to get to you. The triangle mounts give uninterrupted sound...

If I find some Mustange triangles, I think I'll for those instead too...

If my woodshop teacher comes back from his hip surgery before I forget about this, I'll come up with some sort of design out of wood and see where i can take it.

Gotta give credit where its due though, this is a great idea HCR13!

Re: Ford Speaker/Tweeters in window triangle

Thanks, but I think its a pretty common thing on most newer cars... I'm surprised no one thought about putting those in a thirdgen... I recommend finding some OEM speakers that go in that area, from Ford or GM or Dodge, doesn't matter. Speakers that small are hard to blow...

yeah, but they are REALLY CRAPPY. I literally just bolted them on, no housing, no pod, just speakers bolted the door panel with long bolts... if you do a search, you should be able to find nice settups where people actually used fiberglass or MDF boards...

Re: Ford Speaker/Tweeters in window triangle

the mustang ones (and i presume the sable and taurus versions as well) are pretty nice components.
my GF's car has two amps to power the whole system (8 or 10 speakers)
i believe its got the two in the dash, two in the doors, two in the back glass area, two in the elbow rests in the back seat, two tweeters in the front.
i think thats it.

My 99 Grand Prix GT has little tweeters similar to these mounted in the triangle area. But they look even smaller and dont stick out much. I might have to take them out and size them up one day...

Eventually, I'd like to go back to the junkyard and look a little harder and fine maybe smaller ones...nothing wrong with these but a bit smaller wouldn't hurt...

92RS:...that sure is. I've never heard of the Rocky's until I started talking to my neighbor... he also has WRX STi, so he knows his cars...

the 97-03 Grand Prix' have a similar setup, but you'd want to trim off about 3/4" off the bottom since it curves in to fit behind the stock door panel. I've got a couple kicking around my room, I'll see if I can get you guys some pics

Both the G6 and Vibe have tweeters in these locations. I'm sure they'd fit in the Third Gen with little modifications
