I don't advise putting a sub box on top of the flat part (over the gas tank). there is no good and safe way to hold it down. If you stop quick or get in an accident, someone will get hurt. There are some really good plans around here to build a flush box. I built my single 12" box to fit in the lower part of the well and had plenty of space to still mount the t-top bag in the stock spot.

There are many different ways you can build or buy a sub box to place in the well and still have room for your T-Tops. I would recommend you looking into that, a simple search in this forum will show you many pictures of what other members have done...IIRC the box that I built you could also place your T-Tops in the right spot but dont quote me on that considering I dont have T-Tops.

Do you have pics of your single 12" box? I was thinking about doing that too...

I'll see if I can dig anything up. I believe I posted them a couple years back on this site and I've changed computers since, but we'll see what I can find tonight when I get home from work.
Get a T-top bag to put them in & strap it down & your box would be directly in the way. The T-top bags are designed to strap down to where you are wanting to build a box.
makes way more sense, weighs a lot less and frees up so much more use-able space in our cars and makes storing and carrying t-tops so easy.
Its an easy space to make a custom fiberglass enclosure as well.
It's a good idea, but since your losing the spare and cutting out the metal bracing to make room for an enclosure it doesn't make as much "sense" as some may think. Putting a enclosure in the well isn't as permanent a modification.
There is another way. I've been designing and installing subs for over twenty years. A particular type of enclosure called isobaric might be the way to go. I've designed and installed one in my GTA and it kicks the back of your head with tight, controlled, accurate bass. The only catch is you have to have a little more power than normal. The benefit is the sub size is literally cut in half. This way you get the benefits of the sound from a large enclosure without the extra weight and it doesn't consume the entire rear hatch. If you have t-tops you still have room to store them. Check out the attached photos. If anyone has questions on how to build one of these subs just ask. I'll need to know the specs of your subs to give you net volume figures. I'll also need to know the size of port you intend to use. When tuning one of these enclosures, accurate figures are critical since a small miscalculation in percentage can affect the tuning frequency.

Reason: spacing

when was the last time anyone ever used the spare? And I didnt remove the metal bracing, because it made more "sense" to keep it in place.
