I have had good luck with Duals as temporary speakers for a good time, the biggest problem with them is the cones blow out of the baskets, in which some black RTV silicone fixes real easily.
For $30 you cant expect god, or quality even, your lucky you get what they give, turn your bass down to nil, turn it up to the loudness you like it at, and adjust the bass up until you get no flat notes or distortion.
Also if you wired your speakers backwards, this may have some effect.
If they still sound worse than you think they should, I'd also check the wiring on the head unit. Its not uncommon to find that someone has made a mess out of wiring (especially with the radio) in the car. I'm still trying to untangle the stereo system wires in my car.

When you say it sounds like crap, what do you mean?
Not very loud, or distorted at all levels, etc.
Are they hooked to an amp, or just to the deck?
Part of the problem might be just the speakers themselves. Duals are a pretty low end speaker. But let us know what type of problems you're having, and maybe we can help some.
