I was just thinking about this....... Since component speakers have the two different parts: Tweeters and woofers (not counting crossovers) Couldn't it work out pretty good if I just installed the tweeters where the front speakers are, and put the woofers in the back? I figure the advantages of this would be: a) Less modification needed, trying to find a place for the tweeters b) Would only have to buy one set of components. the money saved could allow me to buy some REALL good quality stuff What do you guys think? Or maybe this is really obvious and i'm just ridiculous

"a tweeter should not be mounted more than 6 inches from its woofer. violating this rule will degrade imaging. restrict tweeter placement to a 6-inch range in all directions, then consider how to best modify the other mounting guidelines. separates (components) are most advantageous in front, where mid-range performance is most critical and mounting flexibility is more likely to provide a benefit. if you plan to use separates in the front you should consider using custom molded kickpanels, aiming the tweeter at the ears."

somewhere else before this paragraph it mentions tweeter placement with adding a tweeter to a speaker setup:

"do not mount where a passenger forms an obstacle between a person and the speaker"

"do not mount too close to your ear, or that's all you'll hear"

"mount as close to ear level as possible"

"aim towards the ear"

"beware of windshield reflections" (windshields are sound mirrors)

weigh the factors of performance, practicallity, and aesthetics

and now for my personal opinion. do the kick panels or find a nice set of 4X6's for the dash holes. they bounce off the windshield and get plenty loud and clear in a camaro.

Put good 6 x 9 speakers in the sail panel holes, a nice general purpose speaker in the fronts and add on tweeters on the dash pad, and woofers in the hole in the back. Which is where you can locate the amps and crossovers and stuff. But for a good sound without all that, I would get some premium 6 x 9s with a heavy magnet to carry the base in the sail panels, some premium 4 inch rounds for the front and seperate tweeters for the dash pad. Combined with a nice head unit in the dash with 200 watts or so of power and you are good to go. Get a nice Double Din unit and it will look stock too.

I put 4x6 polk audio with bass blockers in the dash, Boss high power 6x9s in the rear, with seperate tweeters up by the rear window with some little brackets I made, and I took the drink holders off of the doors and cut holes for infinity 6 1/2s. I have a Sony CD with a USB port, and a Fosgate amp. It sounds really good.

Quick question about your set-up...did you just cut a hole in the door?...do you have power windows? i was just looking at my car last night and thought about making an enclosure on both doors using the existing screw holes that are already there...my plan was to make it kind of like kick panels would be but on the doors...idk yet tho...my only problem is i take my stainless coffee mug with me EVERYDAY to work...so now id have to find another way to make a cup holder...i refuse to try and hold on to my coffee while i drive...i have a hard enough time keeping that sucker put when its in the cup holder(i take backroads to work....all have just about no posted speed limit and nice long sweeping corners, well a few are like 80* turns but lean like a nascar track and say 10mph on them, its fun to grab second and power out of those ones haha)

Ive done alot of different setups with my thirdgen. The one that works best I think are fabricating your kick panels for 6.5" (JIM85IROC has some posts about how to make those). You can also put your tweeters in there, but what I did was replace my crank windows with power windows and put the tweeter where the crank used to be in the door panel, and some good 6x9" in the sails. Using the speakers in the dash just isn't going to give you a full sound. Just my opinion.
