I'm trying to put my '87 IROC back into as near original condition as I can given that a few mods will be required. One thing I want 'cause I'm not an audiophile is an OEM stereo, which I have modded with a 3.5mm IPOD jack. What I'd like to do is put just a little bit more power behind the deck. I've looked for small form amps that I could hide behind the dash or in the console but most seem to be 15" or more long requiring them to be mounted under seats or in the hatch area. Has anyone modded a late model Monsoon or similar amp into a 3rdGen? Or, are there any small form amps on the market that could be hidden easily?

I'm thinking an Alpine PDX-5 might be small enough to tuck away somewhere. Anybody using one?

Ok, nobody bit on that one. So if I want to add a sub at some time down the road is a 5 channel amp what I'll need? What's the biggest sub I can possibly get in the storage compartment?

I have been curious to what 4ch amps would fit under the passenger seat..

And as for subs, I've seen 15's in our cars but it takes a lot of space. Mainly the rear seat area.

The PDX-5 seems to be one of the smallest amps (physical dimensions) I've found. 10-3/16"W x 2-1/2"H x 8-3/8"D I'm thinking it'll fit under the passenger seat easily. Gotta put the interior back together then take some measurements.

I don't wanna jamb a monster PA system in the lock box! *lol* I'm thinkin' maybe a 10" could be easily hidden in there. Gotta think about that one.

A PDX would fit under the passenger seat. On the cheaper end I bet a V Power F-300 would fit too.

I bought a cheapo Kraco amp from Pep Boys back in 98 that I used for a few years, and everyone told me that it would catch fire and burn down my car because it wasnt a MOSFET.

It was 4 channels and sounded pretty decent, with cheap Audiovox speakers.

The thing must have been all of 6" long. I will try to find it in my box of goodies, since I replaced it with a 500W JVC MOSFET 4 channel amp and a nice set of 5 way JVC speakers.

Wow I found one that looks just like it but its a 2 channel version on Ebay.

I wanted to keep mine stock but technology has come a long way since the 80's and I am a really big JVC fan.

BTW, Jensen makes some pretty small amps. You will have to convert to inches.

I really liked the Infinity PDX-5 amps. I'm sure I can hide one under a seat with no problems. That'll be a project for next spring I think. I've had just about enough of wiring stuff for one year.

I just got my OEM deck reinstalled today....



It sounds Ok for now. Time to move onto other parts of the restoration, just waiting for parts.

i mounted a factory head unit out of our 2002 avalanche. now that i am putting an amp in the avalanche i am going to wire the factory one to my front speakers and it should fit under the dash. ill be doing this project pretty soon so i will post back.
