sub box build

hey all,

i followed the instructions available in one of the stickys here for building a rear well box, and it took me most of the afternoon but it is done in a dry fit stage. i still need to test fit it in the car, trim the side pieces, and then re assemble it with glue and add the top panel to actually house the subs.

the instructions were very good, save one part, where there is an incorrect angle. I noticed just before i began to put the pieces together, but there was plenty of extra from the 4x8 sheet of mdf so i rebuilt it properly.

here are some pics

Re: sub box build

test fit today and everthing looks good, i will be cutting the top soon, but first i am going to reassemble with the liquid nails and caulk the interior seams.

i will put up pics later, i got out the air sander and rounded all the sharp edges a bit as well as the one lip that slides under the hatch latch. the box slipped right in for me, no shimmying, no fighting, no force necessary. and it didnt budge once it was down there. I am really pleased with the way it turned out.

there are two parallel pieces on either side and one perpendicular piece on either side that are the sides of the inward cuts and what the large angled piece that rests against the forward part of the well- the way the instructions make it has the two in-line pieces at a perfect angle, except they have a 3/4 piece perpendicular between them that doesnt match the angle. I threw out the pieces as soon as i saw that it was geometrically impossible to make them flush, and started over. I didnt write down anything, i just cut from the hip on the table saw after making some overall dimensions and then used a jig to maintain the angle.

As long as you cut one piece at a time and assemble as you go it should be fairly obvious to you.

good luck!

alright i picked up my subs amp and wires this past weekend. i have yet to cut out the top piece for my box, but from the looks of the subs im going to need a baffle to raise them up another 3/4" because they are really deep.

My question is where do I put the t tops in the car now that I have speakers and amps back there?

I'm going to have to build something special for them.

Re: sub box build

i have my baffles made and ready, and the top sheet i cut out from a cardboard template i made is really close to fitting properly. The big issue now is that the box itself sits right against the back of the well, and i need the top sheet to reach it so i can screw it down etc. but the top sheet does not fit perfectly enough yet for it to be a good fit with the back of the box. I just made my second revision to the top and will hopefully be finished soon.

Re: sub box build

Nice, when I was looking at the direction I was totally lost with the top cause you have to kinda wing it.
I finished my box but it's not this one, my friend end up talk me into building one that sits up angled towards the driver, much like the ones on ebay.

Is your box split into two separate chambers?

Also I will recommended anyone reading this not to buy a Amp wiring kit off Amazon.com if they can't ship in with in two days. Mine gave me a 12 day till ship (that was fine cause I had not finished the box) and now I'm look at not getting it till late October (not fine at all).
