I'd like to get a nice pair of 6x9's that have good bass to fit under the sail panel covers. I have a 10" sub to handle below 85hz, but need something to fill in the bass above 85hz. Has anyone had success in fitting a pair of 6x9's with a deep mounting depth? What modifications were involved? My car is an 89 GTA.

I have fairly deep 6x9s in my car , the magnet alone is twice as big as factory. There is plenty of space , I took the fiberglass insulation and stuffed it away from the speaker.

You may have something that I call speaker socks installed behind your sail panel. You could either remove them or make them bigger somehow. I think they are there to reduce reflection from the area inside. Not all Thirdgens have them though which is why some may not have noticed them. If you have high end speakers it would be a pretty safe bet that you would want some kind of sound absorption inside there.

I also came across an install that included plywood (1/2"?) between the speaker and the mounting surface. I'm not sure if it was to absorb vibration or because of the speakers that were mounted inside at one time. -May be a possibility to consider.

Thats part of what I had removed , I stuffed it down and kinda ripped it. One side I took it out completely not much difference. I was more worried about it catching on fire with the new speakers.

I would remove what's left if you can because if it gets wet it may lead to it rusting. If the speakers are actually contacting the metal behind it, then look at the distance it's sticking out and determine if you can put a spacer in without it touching the back. Then try fitting the sail panel. It's been a while but there should be enough space inside there without one.

So the 3" mounting depth that is often referred to is because of that fiberglass baffle? If I modify that or remove it I should be able to get a 4" depth to work?

You would have to measure to see what you have. I've gone past the limit on the fronts by cutting and moving a few things around. Just need to be careful and decide if it's worth doing or not.

bro take all that sh1t out and dynamat the walls and floor of the car. you can mount any speakers there i have alpine 6x9s on the walls. i'll take pics of them if you want. i also have what i did with the mat on my photobucket link in my sig

Yeah, I ended up just getting Alpine 6x9's as well since they are a shallow speaker. They sound ok, but I know I'll end up regretting not getting a better speaker. The Alpines don't reproduce the lows like some other speakers can.
