Beware of SQUARETRADE warranty for 3rd gen to 4th gen radio swap.

Just wanted to share a personal experience with the SQUARETRADE warranty company that is offered sometimes on EBAY purchases.

About three months ago, I purchased a 4th gen OEM radio to go in my '91 T/A and as you guys know, you have to trim the mounting ears to get them to fit in third gen cars. Anyway, I purchased the SQUARETRADE warranty that was tagged on the auction, just in case I had a problem. (The company I purchased it from only gave 30 days warranty, which I was OK with.) Sure enough, the volume knob started acting up and when I tried to file a claim with SQUARETRADE, one of the questions to answer before I filed the claim was "Has the equipment been altered in any way?". Well, technically, the radio had been altered, but not in any way to affect the radio itself, just the mounting tabs. So I answered yes. As soon as I clicked the "submit claim" button, the next screen was "CLAIM CLOSED" saying that they do not honor warranties on items that have been altered.

I guess I should have said no to everything and sent it on in - no none would probably have said a thing, but I was trying to be straight with them. At least if I had done that, I could have argued with a person instead of being dumped by a default on a computer.

Just wanted everyone to be aware if you are considering a 3rd gen to 4th gen radio swap.

I thought of that too, but they ask you for the part number of the radio early in the claim process and that is the only radio I had with them, so they got me there too. But I did cancel my warranty with them after they bounced me and they sent me back about 90 percent of my money, so at least they didn't get all of my money and still not process my claim.

I'm not sure how to because the volume knob is inconsistent. If you turn the knob down, the volume might go up or vice versa.
