post pictures of your head units!

thought many times over this, but i think im ready to give up my factory radio. i'm sure a lot of us have the problem of wanting that original look but not liking our input options(cassette adapter, fm modulator/transmitter, external cd changer, etc)

what do you guys have installed? anything that looks nice when driving at night along with the orange interior lights? looking for bluetooth ready units! post pictures please! especially lit up at night!

I jump in. couple different installs over the years

This was in my 89 RS with a flush mount kit. Pic's a bit blurry since I didn't have the greatest of cameras at the time.

This was my 97 GTP with the HUMount install kit.

nothing in the 87 TA quite yet....

I've had my share of HU's...But this one is my favorite so far.
And before u ask...yes thats a firebird logo =]]]

What i like about it:

Variable illumination (green,red,blue)
Variable backgrounds, screensavers
Audio can be customized online (EQ, Time aligment,Crossovers, etc)
RCA aux in
memory card slot (can record songs from the radio)
Looks classy.

Oh and if u are wondering why the mount kit looks like that its cuz I put a fake faceplate on whenever I leave the car.

The GTP install is very very clean. The last one is really impressive. Whats the brand/model of that? all i'm really concerned with is how it will look inside the car.. ive never even seen custom images on head units before!

Re: post pictures of your head units!

If you want I can take a pic of it at night. The Unit is an Eclipse CD8445.You can download animated backgrounds or a tool to make ur own from the Eclipse website.I like my HU because for me it was likeee sound quality meets good looks. Theres a newer version (the cd 5000) thats ipod compatible but its kinda pricey.

Pioneer makes the DEH-8600MP.(and the premier version of that same radio,deh860mp I think)They hav blue illumination only but the little screen is in color and u can also cuztomize the background and the screensavers.the built in ones are great too.my personal favorite is an animated decibel meter that actually reads the db of the music u are playing. My dad so happens to have one laying around.x]It has 6.5v preamp outputs, separate Xovers for rear and front speakers, etc. Its a good sounding unit with good looks.

Most newer ///Alpine head units have variable illumination, the ones that turn to amber match our lighting reaaaal nice making it look pretty much stock at night.

But..As far as looks..love JVC's El Kamaleon.the whole unit its black until it senses that ur finger its close then it lights up.If the unit is off and the inside of ur car its dark enough u cant tell u have a radio in there. It also has video playback all in a single din size. That'll make ur buddys go wowww dawwwg.

Oooor Alpines FantomFace decks *drools*

I hope that helpss...were u looking for a specific brand???

My 92 with a Panasonic CQ-HX1083U touch screen that's been there for about 5 or 6 years.

My 89 with a 2002 GMC/Chevy Truck Delco Theft-Lock CD unit which I've painted the inside of the buttons to match the red LED dash lights (they're more red than the picture shows).

It feeds a Memphis Belle amplifier which drives a single 12" Memphis MOJO sub and MB Quart front/rear. It suits my needs, except it's hard to see with the sun on it.

Variable Illumination,hi volt output, built in equalizer (parametric)Crossovers,Rca aux,the radio reception is amazing...the sound quality is unbelievable even with my not so top of the line speakers.I like the knobs in the front..for me thats some sort of a Neo-classic touch...all in all I love my HU

Original unit. Refurbished with an iPOD jack installed. Stock look, new technology. Best of both worlds.

I've been planning on getting it for months but stuff always comes up, and can never save up for it. I'm worried that even after removing the little factory radio holder thing in the radio housing it will still stick out. But HOPEFULLY it will be awesome and flush!

Re: post pictures of your head units!

I'm hoping to get this baby put in when I get a new radio pad that actually has mounting tabs intact. I went to test fit it yesterday the previous owner did a real good hack job on the stereo that's in there right now.

Transmetal, did you just order that HUMOUNT? They sent me a picture of that exact one because they just completed it. I ordered one for my car yesterday. Please send pics after it is installed. It looks great!

I've been going back and forth with Mark at MAP Tech since August. He gave me a deal on the mount because he's not sure if they fit Firebirds. He used the Fiero mount and I sent him the gta logo and he made it up for me. Problem is my radio pod is all hacked up so it's gonna be a bit before I can get a nice one and try to install everything. So far all I did was load the deck into the mount as far as I know I have the first one for 3rd gen birds besides people that have 4th gen consoles but it looks killer! I've had one in my Grand Prix for a while now.

Re: post pictures of your head units!

Well, thank you for doing the leg work and getting a GTA version started. Without you, I would have had to start fresh. I emailed him to ask if he had a GTA version and Mark told me he just completed one. I will have mine installed as soon as I get it. Do you need a new radio pod? The junk yard next to me has one that I can get for you. Let me know.

I put a humount in my 92 pontiac trans am there on my pics page. There was some custom fab to get the radio to go in flush. but it turned out great.

Re: post pictures of your head units!

death metal tony
I went to humount.com and ordered the 1982-1992 camaro insert that holds the radio. Then I had him customize it to say Trans Am in red leds with a metal overlay. On my ta i had to cut some plastic off of the radio console to get it flush so i can mount it to the existing screw holes. I also had to file the plastic down a little bit to get the head unit to go in to the opening. There also was a bit to file down on the side mounting plates which were plastic. Then put the cover on its a little bit tweaked but its a thick mounting plate. Then i wired it up to come on when the ignition is on. Because I like to see the trans am when i drive. Instead of only having it come on at night.

Re: post pictures of your head units!

I have the same problem with my older Kenwood head unit as you do mrseadoo. Lacks sitting flush by about 3/8". But my install is in a Camaro. I'm going to upgrade to a KDC-X993 Kenwood and hope it's a little less deep so my mount will sit flush without modding anything. It's probably the same depth, but I can hope I guess. My head unit is hitting the vents in the console. Not real sure how I'll get by that if the new head unit is the same depth.
