12" and 15" subs

My friend from work was telling me the setup that his brother has and I had never really heard of something like it. He said he has a ported 15" sub and a sealed 12" Is it common to have different sized subs? He was saying the 12" sounded better for the mids and higher tones and that the sealed box made it sound punchy. He said the 15" was better for getting the lower bass notes and that the ported box made them sound really deep. He said when combined together it made a great sound. So I was just wondering if this setup would be doable in a 3rd gen or how it would sound. I had planned to get 2 15"s in the future, but do you think they would still be able to get the higher and mid notes as well as a 12? Thanks for any input.

Maybe he should check his ears. Never heard of this combo. Doesn't make sense.

12" for "mids and higher tones" His logic is flawed.

Woofers don't produce mids and highs. They play low frequency.

I have used 10's for mid bass before, currently using 8's for mid bass, but I do admit I have never considered a 12 for mid bass

In Tims car we put 10's (and tweeter) in the 6x9 spot and set them up for mid bass then ran four sealed 15's in the rear for boom

Currently I got 8's (and tweeter) in the 6x9 spot of my own car set up for mid bass and have 2 ported 10's in the back for the boom.

The 12 sealed would forsure give a crisper cleaner bass over a 15 ported if thats what he ment, but maybe I just dont understand what he means

Re: 12" and 15" subs

mixing a 12 and a 15 really doesn't have any benefit if the correct sub is used in the correct size box. If anything, you're going to have a less accurate reproduction of the sound due to cancellation issues and differences in frequency responses.

unless you're running some crazy time alignment and crossover setups, you'd probably be better suited with a pair of 12s; lots of cone area and good range on the low end

Re: 12" and 15" subs

Well I guess that answers my question. Would a pair of 12s still be able to get the depth and lower frequencies that a pair of 15s could achieve? Thanks.

My IDQ sub only plays to 110 hz. Not much midbass there

I ran 8's in the rear for fill in my first set up. Worked OK.

I suppose a 10" mid woofer might work...but what's the point.

I've felt your BOOM.........

With the right box....yes.

Then again...how low do you want to go. You need to decide on a frequency and the type of music you listen to. A box is usually built and tuned to a certain frequency.

You realize that two 15's is like having three 12's (or five 10's) in terms of cone area.
