Reman UX1 works, but clock goes out when lights go on

My redone UX1 works perfect EXCEPT the clock/display light goes out when you flip on the headlight switch. WTH?

Everything else is fine -- display, tuning, power antenna, fairly good reception, new speakers are much better too. Fade, balance, am stereo (remember that?) are good, too.

The ancient backstory

A while back, I was looking for a UX1 to replace a universal that kept cutting out. Thanks to RoadThrills, I came up with a rebuildable core that corvetteradios.com went thru for me from top to bottom, replaced just about everything. $205 including shipping.

Went to stuff it back in and DOH someone had used a 21-pin repair harness to stuff the later model 'universal' in my '87 Firebird. Not only that, they used a crap piece of bare steel strap to hold it up that rubbed a bunch of wires in the harness raw that were causing an intermittent with the old radio. Cut out the junk work, spliced in a new Metra 12-pin harness, (after disconnecting the battery) and double checking every wire. Fired it back up and everything works great...except the clock/display.

It just goes black, works fine all the other time, perfect time.

Any one else face this?

Re: Reman UX1 works, but clock goes out when lights go on

It is an issue that can sometimes come up when mixing and matching years of radios and vehicles. I have dealt with it once, but I just wired it up so that the backlight was always on when the radio had power. I did not research the correct way of fixing it. The other times, I just simply used a different radio.

Re: Reman UX1 works, but clock goes out when lights go on

I think the simplest way to fix would be to disconnect the wire that tells the radio to dim when the lights are on. I had a similar issue with a factory radio from a later model were it the back lights wouldn't dim when the head lights were on. sorry i can't be of more assistance
