Need a little help, I have a set of infinity kappa 4x6 speakers, I was wondering if any modification would be needed done to the dash or would they just fit fine?

They should fit fine! The size of the magnet is what matters. If the magnet is bigger then stock, you'll need to cut out some of the heating/cooling dust passages.

Once you remove your dash pad, you'll see what I mean.

I believe they would fit, but you may have trouble with the depth on the driver's side.
I was able to put a 6 1/2" speaker in on the passenger side with no problems, but the gauge cluster or something gets in the way on the driver's side, so I had to put them over the Dash and cut holes in the covers. (I have a set of uncut covers that I can replace them with if I ever need to, for anyone wanting to criticize me "ruining my dash" )

I have a pair of the reference 4x6's in the dash of my camaro, the passenger side it fits in perfectly, on the driver's side though, you have to raise the speaker like a quarter of an inch, or the magnet hits the cluster. By raising it so slightly, the dash still goes back on without the dash touching the speaker, so there's no worry about the speaker putting any pressure on the dash speaker grill. I have installed this same setup in 2-3 other people's 3rd gen camaros and it always looks good, and sounds amazing. Having the kappa series though, you may not be able to do that. From previous experience with kappa speakers, they tend to be a good deal bigger than the reference models.

I put in the Alpine SPS-406(4x6), it was tight/snug around the magnet, but there was no cutting of plastic and it does not rest on the cluster and no speaker plate was used for spacing.

Do new 4 x 6's specific to our vehicle just plug in like the stock speakers?

not at all... I soldered a wire from each terminal of the speaker, and connected a small blade type connector to each end, and plugged that into the stock terminal. I know most people just cut the factory terminal off, but I couldn't make myself cut it.

Me neither. That's why I'm really reluctant to mess with them at all but randomly they'll get real crackly sounding so I'm about ready to change them.

I am looking at replacing the dash speakers in my 83 Z-28.From reading alot of the posts,it looks like a few different sizes would fit.My question is how do I remove the front dash to get the old ones out.

Has anyone put 6x9s in instead of the 4x6s? I could probably just put them on top of the dash but idk if I like the look of that.

The sound difference between 6x9's and 4x6's wouldn't be enough of an improvement for me to chop up a dash pad for. I have boston acoustic front 4x6's and they sound amazing! Just got to get the right brand. ONLY benefit to 6x9's is SLIGHTLY more bass, but thats what a sub is for. A nicely set up system will have a sub for the bass frequency's and some nice speakers for the treble. With that set up, ONLY treble comes out of the speakers, so size shouldn't be an issue. Just my personal set up and my 2 cents.

Dash is already cracked so I'm not worried about cutting it up, I'm redoing the dash anyways. I've found very good 6x9s that are decent in price and I can't find the same speaker in 4x6. I've already got 2-12" subs 800rms each and I'm building a new box so it hits better. I'm almost sure that I'm going to put the 6x9s up front I'm just wondering if anyones done it. Ill post pics of it when I start

Actually midbass/mid range is just as important. The best set up would be to have a front set up using 3 way. IMO midbass in kicks/door, midrange in whichever you dont use (kick/door), midrange can be placed in dash but the windshield reflect too much imo. And tweeter either placed with the mid, or in the a pillar.

And putting 6x9s in the dash is going to be near impossible to put in the dash with major modifcation. You'll have to cut the gauge cluster and the heating ducts. A 6x9 is much deeper than a 4x6. Almost double actually, theres plenty of 4x6s that require modifcation to fit in the dash, so doing a 6x9 will be a major task. If going through that much work, mod the kick panel to accept a 6.5" speaker. 6.5s are much cleaner sounder than 6x9s and do not distort as easily and give better bass.

i believe the firebirds have the problem with bigger 4x6s or a 4 inch plate system.

Camaros do as well, been there done that lol

4 inch speakers don't produce enough output in the 50-250 Hz range to be useful without a dedicated midbass located close-by.

But onto things that matter... anyone try a 5.25" in the dash?

It can be done, again with modification. There are some slim/shallow component sets that fit with only modifying the mounting bracket

I too am in the market for new dash speakers, and ain't too picky about how great they sound at this point in time. I'm just tired of listening to blown-out speakers. I'm looking for something more in the plug-and-play catagory, with no modifications needed. Anyone recommend a good size/brand to look for?

Alpine SPS-406 (4x6) Fits fine, sounds good, NO mods to dash, little rewire work.

im putting 6.5 speakers into my dash to replace my stock

I just put a set of rockford 4x6's in my camaro and had to use a spacer ring on the driver side.

My 85 came with 6x9's in the dash, but I haven't looked to see what was cut to make them fit, but apparently, it can be done.

This is how I got it. Not sure how they're in there, I haven't gotten to the interior or electrical yet... still swapping the bad engine.

Nice Weffy. I have some 5x7 Infinity reference 2-ways that I will be putting in the dash when I can find some speaker grills....for some reason buying generic speaker grills has proved tobe a daunting task.

4x6's are so weak and provide little to none midrange and bass notes.

4x6's are good for staging though, especially in the front. 5x7's would be even better too.

I've always wanted to do an entire Infinity Reference system. I'd but those 4x6 2 way component things in the front, with the 3" and the tweeter on the plate, and then fab some kick panels with the midbass, although I'm not sure if they have Reference midbass drivers. Then Infinity subs, oh it'd be so cool to have all the same speakers, and so expensive hahaha

What's awesome is when I had the older Reference speakers (5x7's and 12" subs) that had the Pearl White cones to match my car. I still wish I hadn't rid myself of those subs...

So I take it the fatory size is 4"x6" in the dash of my 86' IROC? I prefer Focal speakers for sound quality, don't know if they make them in that size. What is in the rear for size?

if you want focal quality i would recomend a component set in the doors and just disconnect the dash speakers the rear should be 6x9

I can't remember which post or thread, but i read that the Camaro is a little different then the Firebird regrading the heat/cooling ducts! That could be why the alpine's fit in mine and are listed as not fitting the Camaro's........

Try buying them anyways, and IF they don't fit, return them to the store!

osso12- I used type-R 6x9 for rear, so I think I used type-R for the front too!(NOT 100% sure on front though!)

Honestly, I have no idea what the difference is, but 3 yrs ago when I replaced my speakers BEST BUY had type S and R Alpine's speakers there. And IF I remember correctly, the type R's were more expensive.......Why? Good question!

I'm not implying that they are better just because I bought them, or because they COULD be more expensive.......type R's could even be the cheaper one's to buy! Don't know, Don't Care! They fit! They work/sound good, I'm happy with them!

Note: Because of the resent interest of my Alpine speakers....I did some digging......and found the boxes

FRONT: Alpine SPS-406 type S (4x6)
REAR: Alpine SPR-69C type R (6x9)

Okay, haha. The Type R's are pretty much just rated to handle more power, and since you are probably just putting the ~50 watts from the head unit, it doesn't matter at all.

Alpines were always good speakers though, maybe I should think about a Type R system intsead of an Infinity Reference one.
