mounting detachable face in remote location?
I have a Berlinetta and if you have ever seen the stock HU you know how hard it would be to replace with an aftermarket HU. I want to keep the stock HU in place and then mount an aftermarket HU in the spare tire well. Then using a couple CAT5 cables solder the wire between the HU and the detachable face plate. The face plate will be mounted using double sided tape in a spot that is easily reached by the driver. Has anyone else done anything like this? Is there any brand that this would be easier with?

Re: mounting detachable face in remote location?
I have just been working on installing an after-market head unit in my 86 and I ran into a similar problem. The only thing that gets in the way is two vent ducts that feed the small vents that exit beside the front seats. My solution was to remove these ducts and leave the vents in place for aesthetic purposes, you loose two vents but you gain a stereo and retain CD and radio capability. The ducts are just fixed to the side and are quite easy to remove with a flat head screwdriver, the vents are held on by 2 10mm nuts. this frees up enough room for a standard head unit.

cat5 or similar is usually pretty good for something like this, just make sure you can solder the connections (unless you feel like buying and identical model radio to grab parts from

That sure sounds like a lot of work. Why not go with a ready made stealth system. They are very popular among classic and hotrod owners.
