Start of my car audio adventure

Picked up some 12" Kicker subs and a 1000 watt amp from a Co-worker. They are less than 6 months old and look great. My plan is to build a custom panel for the hatch area like the one I built for my 2001 SS. Pic is attached for reference as to what I'm doing.

Still not certain as to what interior speakers to get and whether to throw an amp on them too. May just buy a good head unit and run it as is... I don't know much about this kind of stuff.

Do you guys upgrade your alternator when installing subs? I listen to Rock and country mostly so I don't care to shake the neighborhood windows when driving by but I am wanting a concert quality sound system. I currently have an optima red top battery so it should be ok. In my SS I ran a single 12 with a low power amp, no issues and it sounded great...

Re: Start of my car audio adventure

I havent upgraded my alt to run my system yet, but Im not running 1000watts either. I have 2 12" JL subs running off a JL 250.1 amp.

I do however plan to upgrade to a Soundqubed 1200D and 2 Sundown 12" E series subs. With this I am running 4ga power and ground and doing a big 3 upgrade with 1/0 wire up front. I am going to stay with the stock alt and see how it does, if it cant keep up, then I will upgrade to a 140A unit.

if its a good quality amp 1000w is alot. you will likely need a pretty big power and ground wires, even bigger if you plan to put an amp on the interior speakers. im not sure what is stock on those but if its around a hundred you will need a bigger alt.

Re: Start of my car audio adventure

For the interior speakers, do you run a seperate amp for them or will this amp provide power for the subs and interior speakers?

I have a Amp install kit from Crutchfield, not sure what gage of wire it came with... but its for up to 1500 watts so it should be plenty.

I may just run the interior speakers off the head unit and call it a day. Depends on how it sounds... Our 2009 Impala has a Bose system which sounds amazing, so thats the quality I'm after in my camaro.

Sorry for the questions... I'm a noob in the car audio world. So this is a learning experience for me

Re: Start of my car audio adventure

lol, doesnt take much to be better than oem bose.no offense meant there.

personally in my 07 monte(my firebird is not ideal audio anything with weight considerations) i have a 400w 4ch amp for my polk audio interior speakers and 800w for two low power kicker 10in subs in sealed boxes. this is a pretty good balanced sq setup. the hu makes a big difference, noises from a poor quality hu just get amplified by the amps. if i didnt have much money this is were i would start, decent HU and non amped speakers, but if you want the best sound fullness you going to want to amp them.

if you have a 1500w kit you should be good as long as your second amp isnt more than 500w obviously. the issue with fbodies though is the front stage, the 4x6's just suck for mids no matter what. you could just get a decent HU and power the 4x6's with that and get a stereo amp for either some 6x9s or convert the sails to 6.5 components. i like 6x9s my self because i feel like they have more mid to low coverage before you get into sub frequencies. they need power to sound good though

Re: Start of my car audio adventure

A quick rundown of my current system, then the system I plan on building, just so you have a reference point, oh and I am going more for SPL than full blown SQ.

Currently I have...
Pioneer 4800BT headunit (cheap walmart version and it sounds cheap)
nothing in the front 4x6 locations
MB Quart PVL 612 components in the rear sail panels running off the deck
(2) JL Audio 12WXV2 subs
JL Audio JX250.1 monoblock amp

What i am installing in the next month
Alpine CDE147BT head unit
nothing in the front for now, maybe I'll put in some Infinity 4x6s at some point
Same MB Quart mids
Rockford Fosgate R250X4 to run the mids (I like the 4 channel to have the option to run fronts later if I choose to)
(2) Sundown E12V2-4 subs
Soundqubed Q1-1200D amp

But I do agree with JW, everything starts with the head unit. My wife has a Hyundai accent and we just swapped out her stock head unit for a Pioneer DVD unit and the difference was enormous. In fact even on her stock speakers, her stereo sounds clearer than mine with the nice MB Quarts and thats all in the head units processors.

Re: Start of my car audio adventure

i have replaced the audio in every car i have had but the biggest difference is always the HU. i have a yukon sle that has a pretty decent stock setup with component speakers and everything. i went to just a cheap 130 sony unit that has HD radio and usb and aux inputs. it sounds 100% better and clearer with just that done. normally thats all i do in my trucks because i dont drive them very much or far

i didnt say why i picked the things i listed but i like the clarions they have a million audio adjustments to make the sound to how you want it and high voltage rca's which is for good sound transfer to the amps. good audio and the wires to the amp are pretty important for lack of noise. the clarions and polks have a natural sound to me where some are more digital sounding, IMO
